So I have my hands on two iPhones (both 16GB black) and did speed tests. One was consistently faster than the other my several fold. The one on the left is a week 31, the one on the right week 27. Both show 4-5 bars.

Test 1

Test 2, same as Test 1 but 5 minutes later

Test 3, I switched SIM cards, and the phone on the right still remains fast

Only about 1/10 of the time could I get the phone on the left to be as fast as the phone on the right, whereas the one on the right was almost always faster.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5B108 Safari/525.20)

Those are some pretty good speeds on the one on the right. I get very close to what you have on the left on my 16GB black that I received on July 21. I wonder if Apple quietly fixed a hardware bug or something.

Is there a way to know to if they are connected to the same cell ?

What happens if you switch off the fastest one?

Is that being tested using WiFi?

I have two 3G iPhones here as well but I don't have weird speed differences that you are seeing there, mine are pretty mush the same on each phone.

how do i do that

can someone tell me what site that is or how can i perform this same test with my phone i would like to know where i stand thanks

What's the exact URL? I'd like to try it on mine.

And during your test, which iPhone feels hotter/warmer?

Uh oh. My speeds are very similar to the one on the left when I get full service...
Could it be a defective batch?

I get speeds just like the right (high) when on 3G and get speeds just like the left (low) when on edge.

I notice the 3G icon on both of those test phones, but I wonder if, for some reason, the phone is reporting 3G but using edge. That is, a bug of some sort that might be corrected in the next firmware rev?

Did you try restarting the phones? If you have the chance, you should try them both on edge and then try 3G again.

Also, I think www.testmyiphone.com is a better test site (or at least, it's a good one, I don't know the one you used). The techniques they use there make it better from what I've read.

I agree -- I like testmyiphone.com better.

According to that site, my average WIFI speed is 4153.83 kbps, 3G is 696.5 kbps, and 203.5 kbps for EDGE. So my 3G isn't as good as your "good" iPhone, but not as bad as your bad one... Not sure if that makes my phone of the 2% with a problem or not.

I did the same test as the O.P. last week with almost the EXACT SAME results!

He's not making this up.

My phone was constantly between 1000-1200 and my cousin's was always in the 300-500 range. Both on 3G.

He's had good 3G speeds sometimes too, so it's not totally broken, but for one Saturday that was all we could make his do, even side by side with mine, which always did fine.

i thought mine ran slow when i had full service.. its at 604 kbps....

i have often found myself turning off 3g because a connection times out and then turning it back on

Here's an update.

Last night, I rebooted both phones and they began showing similar speeds. I guess there was something running that was slowing one of the phones down, even though both are set up the same.

Testing using www.testmyiphone.com and getting:

2.14Mbps (2143Kbps / 262kB per second
Type: 3G
you are 10.72x faster than Edge
latency: 509.75ms

Just did a Wifi test and Im only getting 2.78Mbps (not much faster than 3G)

how fast should Wifi be? ITs a "G" wifi router i have
