I have an Macbook Pro M4 pro that I use to wfh connected to a couple of monitors and some USB drives. It keeps all my main apps/files, etc. I love it but find it pretty bulky/cumbersome to disconnect from everything to bring with me places and it is fairly bulky to use on the sofa/bed so I bought an M5 Air 13" and to try out and find it very good for travel/sofa use and I'm sure it would suffice for my only laptop but I do play some games on my M4 pro like BG3 and I also like the idea of having a backup laptop and not taking my main device with me on trips and coffee shops and the like so it won't get stolen/broken.

Any of you guys do something similar-have two laptops, one for mostly home office work and one for travel/sofa? I don't like iPads very much and prefer actual laptops.

I have 2 Neos. One stays at home and the other I take to work. I got the Neos because I like the small form factor not to mention making it easy to go mobile in one of my Waterfield bags.

What you described makes you a candidate for a second laptop, in my opinion. It all comes down to size and budget.

I have a MacBook Pro M4 for heavy lifting and a MacBook Air M1. Also a Mac mini M2 Pro relegated as a TM server and other stuff. I use an Ivanky Dock most of the time with M4 but recently have been my Air mostly as it still does 85% of what I need, the weight and form factor is perfect for disconnecting and taking out to cafe etc. Both are configured similarly in terms of apps. I've kept the M4 unplugged by syncing with Mac mini so files stay current and use the Air with the Ivanky dock and 3 monitors (use an OWC display link adapter) to drive 3 monitors. I switchback and forth perhaps 3-4 times a month but most of the days I'm rocking the air it still has one of the best form factors with the wedge and the wieight. It has 1tb and 15gb and runs Tahoe 26.4 crisply for most office work. So yes I work with two laptops.
