this shouldn't affect the ability to access the drive if you can see it.

do you have the firewall turned on on either machine? if so, you would need to add time machine to the list of trusted applications.

keep in mind that using time machine on a shared drive is not "officially" supported even though it works so you won't find much about it on the apple site.

I think I do have the firewall up. I'll add Time Machine

For the record, does this File Sharing as a means to back up my macbook through iMac backing up the whole macbook Hard Drive?

Ok...Firewire is on, added Time Machine and still no connection...the drive is there on my Finder's side bar but no connection...

I give up! Two days its taking to get File Share working. Im just going to have to unplug my external Hd and connect it to my macbook because nothing is working and did a utility check and both my macs are fine. Its just that macs are not as intuitive as people say they are.

go into system preferences/time machine and click select disk. You should see the shared drive there. just click on it and hit ok (or apply, can't remember) and it should work, no problem. Your macbook will create a sparsebundle file on the drive that will mount as "backup of macswitcha2's macbook' or something similar depending on what your macbooks name is.

Ok, two freaking days on this thing...

Ok, I turned off firewall, that was the only way that it could of made the connection. However, I go into Time Machine and its not showing up.

Can you do a screencast of what I must do? Sheesh! Why is this so freaking hard!
