As an Oregonian, I'm embarrassed that Kentucky, Arkansas, and Mississippi will have this technology before we do.

Before we know it…drivers licenses will be extinct and Apple will still be promoting the feature🤦‍♂️

Government-enforced Digital ID.

Currently, voluntary. Soon, mandatory.
For website browsing and porn and all other things where so many countries have already or are about to require ID to get to, yep. This absolutely is part of the equation.

Link your Digital ID to your login account to see adult rated material, get on social media, read reddit, do pretty much anything.

I have no idea why the US seems to be so resistant to these kind of things.
We’ve had digital licences in New South Wales for years and I’ve never heard of anyone having an issue.
Maybe because the U.S. is a bit bigger (8 million in New South Wales - about the same as the San Francisco Bay Area). We are also much more resistant to central authority.

In select U.S. states, residents can add their driver's license or state ID to the Apple Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch, and then use it to display proof of identity or age at select airports and businesses, and in select apps.

Earlier this week, Illinois became the 13th state in the U.S. to offer the feature. Subsequently, we shared a list of additional states that are committed to offering the feature in the future, as previously announced by Apple:
  • Connecticut
  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah
As it turns out, two more states have "signed on to adopt ID in Apple Wallet in the future," according to their government websites:
  • Arkansas
  • Virginia
Arkansas launched a mobile ID app in August. It works with Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet, and Apple Wallet support is coming later.

Virginia launched a mobile ID app last week, and it announced it will "prepare for integration with digital wallets" in the "coming months."

Apple Wallet IDs are accepted at TSA checkpoints in more than 250 airports in the U.S., for domestic travel. Given that Apple Wallet IDs are not accepted by law enforcement, and lack many other use cases, carrying a physical ID is still necessary.

To set up the feature, open the Wallet app and tap on the plus sign in the top-right corner. Next, select Driver's License and ID Cards and follow the steps.

If you live in a state that does not yet offer Apple Wallet IDs, you can now create a Digital ID based on your U.S. passport, and present it at the same participating TSA checkpoints, for age and identity verification purposes during domestic travel. It is not a replacement for a physical passport, and it cannot be used for international travel.

Here are just some of the airports that offer the feature — there are hundreds of others:
  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
  • Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)
  • Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
  • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG)
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC)
  • Los Angeles International (LAX)
  • Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)
  • Des Moines International Airport (DSM)
  • Eastern Iowa Airport (CID)
  • Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ)
  • Lea County Regional Airport (HOB)
  • Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU)
  • Billings Logan International Airport (BIL)
  • Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN)
  • Great Falls International Airport (GTF)
  • Missoula International Airport (MSO)
  • Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)
  • Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW)
  • St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL)
  • Richmond International Airport (RIC)
  • Norfolk International Airport (ORF)
  • Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA)
  • Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport (PHF)
Travelers should refer to TSA signage to confirm availability of the feature.

Thanks, Michael Gannon!

Finally death to carrying this blady wallet. Hopefully it will make it to NZ this century.

I don’t understand how being bigger would make the role out of this any different.
The same with central authority what does that mean? I’m happy to accept a plastic card issued by the government but not an app issued by the government.

Government-enforced Digital ID.

In some EU countries it existed for a while. There has been no move to make anything mandatory and usually the issue is that the digital stuff is not accessible to old people or poor people and not fear of government like US people usually have (even though those very same people then turn around and vote for and support an autocrat).

It is super nice to have it all on the phone. Driver's license, passport, healthcare cards, banking, ... Quite convenient.

I often carry no phone at all! 😱

Naa, digital IDs won't be mandatory for citizens in the US. It's not mandatory to carry any ID at all, except when driving, flying, or entering a federal building.
You probably also won't carry your phone while swimming in the ocean. So I really don't see how this should ever be mandatory. Whether your ID is a card with a chip that holds some sort of cyrptographicverification or you have a generated QR code in a phone app really doesn't change anything though. An ID is just some thing that is protected against forgery to some degree.
Digital passports are already largely the norm in most countries and they are effectively the same even though people don't realise it because they still hold a physical thing in their hands. The Digital is just another extra anti-forgery measure which also happens to be possible to move to e.g. a smartphone in theory. In some countries you can load the passport on the phone but since you usually need it outside the country and isn't too useful yet, as you do need the right app to verify its validity.

It's a systemic issue. Digital adoption is behind in the US. Even if complete adoption was reached on digital IDs, I'd still need to carry my wallet because many restaurants don't support tap-to-pay.

Inefficiencies create jobs and $s for interested parties, and that won't change anytime soon here.
Heck, Walmart still doesn't (intentionally) accept Apple or Android Pay because they want you to use their QR code payment app instead so they can track you.
I hate it. I just want to confidently be able to leave my wallet at home, and be able to pay anywhere I go with my phone. Specifically with Apple Pay too, I don't want to have to install a million apps because everyone wants to do their own app-based payments for tracking.

It's not hard. Nearly every CC machine you get from any merchant account provider will support Apple Pay out of the box. You have to explicitly go in and disable it. That means these businesses are deliberately choosing not to accept tap to pay.

I'd still need to carry my wallet because many restaurants don't support tap-to-pay.

I find a lot of restaurants that do not have handheld readers do support ApplePay, but require one to walk to a side station or manager’s position to use it. I always ask, rather than just assume they do not take it. You are correct that they are one of the last categories where I need a card. Home Depot and Lowe’s were the last big ones I used that did not accept Apple Pay, but they are fixed now. Walmart gets very little of my money because they still refuse ApplePay.

Inefficiencies create jobs and $s for interested parties, and that won't change anytime soon here.

I am curious which of these things you attribute to job creating inefficiencies?
