Yes- a great macbook Air could really make apple dominant in the mobile world. It has to be a good machine with great pricing- for consumers and not apple.

A good screen processor and form factor could make the Air a fantastic machine.

Sadly, this won't happen. If they make the bezel substantially smaller, they won't fit a full-size keyboard.

Also, wrt the resolution, you would be right if you run Windows. MacOS can not scale the size of widgets and UI fonts. Repairing this will require to rewrite most of the applications, so it is not going to happen this year.

On your first point. My hope is that they make the bezel smaller and fit a 14" display in there with higher resolution (the pixel density of the current Air and 13" MBP is so last decade...), while keeping the footprint and keyboard size similar...;-)

Or go 15" right away...

On your second point, I don't really have a problem with the smaller widgets and UI fonts (and neither do the 10 Million people who have bought iPhones so far, I know this argument is flawed, but oh well..). All I care about is being able to use my laptop for work, and with the current 13" displays it's impossible.

I dont' think you're going to see the i5 or i7 chip in the new Air, more likely the i3 that's in the iMac.

The TDP would be way too high for a laptop, unless they go with a low voltage/low clock speed version. This would also mean a small cache as well. If Apple does go with i series chip, it will have to be a lower TDP to allow for battery life and reasonable thermal envelope. Of course, they could also redesign the entire case to have better ventilation, but if they do keep the Air around, it will most likely tend toward the thinner end of the spectrum.

Mba

I reckon we will have a MBA 11.6" and 13.3".

MBA 11.6" will be at an approx starting price of £1199 (2.13Ghz, 128SSD, 2Gb Ram)

MBA 13.3" will be at an approx starting price of £1399 (2.4Ghz, 256SSD, 4Gb Ram).

Current prices:

MBA: 1.86Ghz, 120Gb SATA drive, 2GB Ram) : £1174
MBA: 2.13Ghz, 128Gb SSD drive, 2GB Ram) : £1378

Macbook: 2.4Ghz, 250Gb SATA drive, 2Gb Ram: £849

Reading the first post about new MBAs on the Mac Rumors page led me to believe that the new MBAs may well be smaller and cheaper than the current versions. I hope not because, if so, the new versions are almost certain to have even fewer features and less power than the already underpowered MBA we have now. Regardless, I just hope that something happens soon. I am really, really tired of waiting for an MBA update.

Indeed, unless they do something extraordinary.
But you remember the Powerbook 12" Well...

Something else:
You from Oklahoma City, i had a look there with google streetview and it reminds me of GTA San Andreas. :p

When i come to you i take a gun with me. :D

Close specs except that both the 11.6" and the 13.3" machines will have 4GB memory, and not positive on exact clock speeds (although both will be above 2GHz). No idea on pricing yet. :)

I don't believe there is such a thing as a 1.8" 256GB SSD.... you guys really are hoping for something impossible, desktop CPUs, much higher clocks lol

I have never played Grand Theft Auto, or any other Xbox or PS3 game for that matter, so I can't comment on the similarity of OKC to San Andreas. OKC's streets predominately run north and south and east and west, which is typical of most cities in the US that were laid out in the late 19th Century. Anyway, I don't own a gun and have never had a car stolen.:)

I agree that the old 12 inch Powerbook would be a good starting place to design a suitably light and thin updated MBA.

I am really looking forward to an updated MBA. I hope they keep a 13" model.
I know I will be getting an SSD model.
What will be tough is my next decision for a desktop type computer. I am thinking of just keeping my unibody MacBook powering a 27" LED. I am not a fan of paying $699 for a Mac Mini and I don't want an iMac (had one before).

Decisions, decisions.

I routinely use my 17 inch MBP instead of a desktop. I used its predecessor, a 17 inch Powerbook G4, that way, too, but did have to use a desktop for Windows apps. Now, thanks to 6Gb or RAM and VMware Fusion, the MBP does both Windows and OS X apps with ease. Although I may get a new Mac mini to use as an HTPC, I have bought my last conventional desktop.

I think if we see macbook air updates anytime soon you boys will be disappointed. At best you are looking at 4gb of ram and 320M that's it. I can't see an 11" unless its aimed at the cheaper market in which case it may have an atom or something but I think this is highly unlikely.

The 320M would easily provide enough graphics power for my purposes. Whether 4Gb of RAM would be enough for me, though, is an open question. I know from personal experience that 6Gb of RAM allows me to run several Windows apps and several more OS X apps simultaneously from the OS X desktop under VMware Fusion in Unity mode. I also know that 2Gb is woefully inadequate for such a use. I have been trying for some time to get a definitive answer from other posters whether 4Gb would be enough. Alas, I have yet to receive an unequivocal recommendation either way.

could be a 'she' who's shagging someone high up at 1 Infinite Loop :D

Or she's on the design time and doesn't need to shag anyone for her info. Or maybe she's the woman I saw with the 17 inch thin macbook before the beginning of the year as I posted on another thread.

21 September? Hope 'she' is right. I'd love to have that 17 inch.

That's what she said.

The 2010 update will be more about form factor. The processor will not be a desktop processor... the current 2.13GHz model does not have a desktop processor. 4GB of memory is a done deal.

The 2011 update will be about huge 1.8" SSDs, likely from Intel.

Dream setup: 17 inch MBP and 11 inch MBA.

If Apple put out an 11 inch MBA it will redeem them for bringing out a tablet without OSX on it in my book and many others. They do need to keep the 13 inch MBA as well though, it's an important premium model in my view and should really be coming with 3G these days to really get those business users sold on it.

how could they not fit in a full size keyboard  , even if they cant i just really think they should use that space better, either put in a bigger screen or eliminate it. and that goes for all laptops.
