1. Will Apple let you change the payment type at pick up? For example, if when I reserve it I pay in full, can I switch it to AT&T Next when I go to pick it up?

2. Since the Verizon version works on all carriers, I'd obviously prefer that one. But is it possible to purchase that model on AT&T Next as well, or is it locked into Verizon unless purchased at full price?

1. Yes, you can change payment type at pickup

2. I know that all phones purchased on IUP are unlocked, but I would think that if you purchased through AT&T Next, it would be locked to AT&T. Don't know for sure, though. Can you even buy a phone on NEXT and not activate it on AT&T?

Thanks for the response - I'm chatting with an Apple rep at the moment and he's telling me that you can't change payment type at pickup - have you done this for the 7+?

I've heard of other people changing payment type at pickup. I'm wondering if I can buy a Verizon phone using the reservation thing, and then immediately use it on At&T?

I just finished up my call with the Apple rep. He misunderstood what I was asking. He says that I should just reserve one for pickup by paying in full, then call customer service and ask them to take care of switching it to AT&T Next.

I had the same thought about using the Verizon phone on AT&T and asked him the same question. He didn't seem to fully grasp what I was asking - he said I need an account on Verizon even if I pay in full and buy it unlocked... It would be awesome to be able to buy the Verizon version on AT&T Next since it's compatible with all of the carriers.

You probably need a Verizon account to buy a Verizon phone. I can't tell you that fully. In terms of payment options, when you get there, you will have the full gamut.

Gotcha. So it sounds like, by all accounts, I should be able to reserve the phone for pickup by paying in full, then change the payment method upon arrival. I just wonder how long they'll give me to cancel my pre-order. I'm a little hesitant to cancel it beforehand in case they happen to give me a hard time about changing it to ATT Next.

Not sure sure if it's doable because when you do the AT&T Next, they have to scan the IMEI barcode, and if the AT&T doesn't recognize that IMEI then more then likely the AT&T Next won't work. You can however buy the Verizon Model as device only and be one and put it on AT&T network. But I don't think it would be doable for AT&T Next on a Verizon device.

I reserved a phone stating I intended to go through IUP. Then when I got there I was able to switch to carrier installments. There was no problem, the woman was able to charge me through installments and I only had to pay what the taxes would be.

I am 99.9% sure that you cannot put a Verizon phone on AT&T next. I am a former AT&T employee and as of 2 months ago, when I left the company, you definitely couldn't. I doubt that has changed. As someone else stated, it deals with your imei when phones are on installments. AT&T system will recognize it as unknown and it will not allow it to be added to the Next program.

Awesome feedback here. Thanks, everyone!

When you say "installments," do you mean through ATT Next/Verizon Edge/Whatever the others are? I get a $25/month credit for being on AT&T Next...

Right, I am referring to ATT Next. You will still get that credit even if you don't put that phone on the next and buy it at retail price from Apple. The credit actually comes off of the base charge for that line which I'm assuming for your plan is $40, so you probably only pay $15 for your line. (I'm pretty sure that has not changed either but just ask someone from AT&T)

Really? They told me I would only get that line discount if I had Next...

Okay... I just found one nearby and reserved it under IUP. Hopefully this works! Will update later. Thanks again!

I just spoke with an Apple rep who told me that the only way I can switch the phone over to AT&T Next from the iPhone Upgrade Program is if they cancel that order in the store, kick it back out into the main inventory system, then place an order for me with AT&T Next. I'd have to hope that after they cancel the store order nobody else claims the phone. I'd have to cancel my pre-order to do this.

I think this situation is slightly different bc you weren't purchasing a carrier specific iPhone and wanting to use it for installments on a different carrier. I'm not sure how Apple does there iup though. It'll be interesting to know if op is able to buy a Verizon iPhone and put it on AT&T installments.

I know when I was there, whenever the next plan ended (paid in full), people were still able to get their credit, however, they do have different plans out now so I apologize about that statement.. you may have a plan that requires you to upgrade and have a next installment to get the credit!

To clarify, I am not buying a Verizon phone - the one that I found in stock is an AT&T model. The phone itself shouldn't give me any issues. What I'm worried about is switching it from the IUP (how I had to reserve it in-store) and buying it under AT&T Next. I know people are saying that they did it, but I'm wondering about the specifics, since the rep at Apple told me that I'd have to cancel my AT&T Next preorder, then cancel the IUP in-store pickup order when I get there, and reorder that exact phone under AT&T Next.

I don't think that's the case. But anyhow, if you check the bottom of your reservation email you will see:

Can I change to a different form of payment for the iPhone Upgrade Program?
Yes. You can also upgrade your iPhone to carrier financing or purchase it at full price. Ask a Specialist for more information.

I think where it gets tricky for you is that you already have an AT&T Next order.

Right, except it also states under that same FAQ, "You must be currently enrolled in the iPhone upgrade program." I am not, unless reserving this phone under the program signed me up for it.

Oh. That shouldn't be a problem. I think we were a tad confused bc in your original post, your second question said specifically a Verizon iPhone and using it on AT&T next. I see later in your comments that you did find one for the IUP. All should be fine. Good luck!

I don't see that line in my email

Yeah, it's a new line in the email. It actually made the front page of macrumors tonight!

Regardless, I was able to pick up the phone at the Apple store today. I had a great rep, and he told me to cancel my pre-order and need wait with me until at&t next cleared for use again. Was smooth as can be - I was out of there less than 5 minutes after my scheduled appointment time.

Something tells me that they may start cracking down on this though.

Wow just read the article. Interesting. I wonder if that means you can sign up new for the upgrade program using that reservation system. I'm still looking for one for a buddy.

So after searching around for the phone I wanted, I finally found it at Target. Black 128gb. When I asked them what carrier it was for, they said all of them. I confirmed it was model A1661. So I'm guessing Target just gets the CDMA/GSM models and can put them on any network. The girl had to pull out a brand new sim card too and place it in the phone.
Here is the black one next to the silver one.
