Wouldn’t be surprised in the least if newer versions of AirPods are software locked to only work with certain versions of iPhones. That way people will be forced to buy premium devices with features never to be used just to have premium AirPods.

In fact, Apple may remove the high-end model's pressure-sensors and go all-in on gesture controls
Great, because the current pressure sensors are absolutely useless when they get wet, from either rain or sweat.

That doesn't sound like Apple.

Yes, Apple locks features on devices -- but in general, they only do this to preserve the user experience of the feature itself (such as locking AI features to those models with sufficient horsepower to run them in near real time) or because the device's fundamental interaction mode has changed (Apple Pencil).

Beyond this they aim for maximum compatibility. They know their sales come from the ecosystem. Even if a minority might upgrade a phone for new AirPods, fewer would upgrade their phone AND computers, Apple TVs, iPads, watches...

Apple reveals all new AirPods models

1. Low end model
This is the one you need to buy if your personal finance is really bad, but you still don't want others to think that you are struggling in life.

2. Mid level model
Comes with all new upgraded hardware, new chips and better sounds. Perfect for those who can afford a bit more expensive version of AirPods and want to receive respect from others around you.

3. Most expensive model
This comes with all new high quality hardware, fastest chips and best sound quality. This is exactly the one you need to buy if you want others to believe that you are highly successful in life. You will definitely receive a massive amount of respect, which is likely to happen with our mid level model as well, but not guaranteed.

I need them to add wings (or something) to keep them from popping out of my ears and falling on the floor. Currently I can only use mine if I'm sitting still and in a place where it won't be a hassle to get on the floor to look for them as they pop out.

The only "useful" use I can see this having for me at this stage is to be able to "swipe" right and left to ski to next track or previous track when listening to music / podcasts while out walking / running. I have my phone but it's in my pocket, and I use my watch as a remote control.
You may know, but just in case, with current APP:

"Siri, next."
"Siri, previous."

(It can be a bit fiddly, though.)

so the 2026 version would be a VOro version/accessory which would make much more sense compared to what Kuo said yesterday. But even if every single VPro owner would buy one, a very very niche product...

So you would use gestures to do things like play/stop or adjust the volume? I can't imagine wanting to do that over just using a control on the airpod like there is now. Maybe I am judging it a bit early but this seems like a solution in search of a problem.

It’s easy, when out on a run just flail your arms like Ace Ventura when he’s being shot with the poison darts to do all that stuff. It’s so intuitive.

If there’s a more expensive version with gesture-only controls, it’s a pass from me.

I like physical controls, the current ones work just fine.
Maybe in a generation. The first one you're basically signing up to alpha-test their poorly thought out interface.

What's the point of adding gesture control to the APP3, esp. for Apple's Vision Pro headset?
Most people won't consider/buy the headset so it's a mute point of adding it!

Focus on what the APP was built for.. music quality, better noise cancellation and hopefully larger ear tips, even if it means a larger case to store the larger ear tips, which is needed.

Apple can add the gesture control to the higher end version and leave the 'basic' one for the general public at the lowest price.

You’ll be able to have a appu (better pronounce as a pooh) in your ear and walk around in public talking to yourself and seemingly twitching as you adjust appu settings by gesturing.
If they had a sense of humour the key gesture would be forearm raise with the back of ones hand facing away from you and centre finger raised. Would make for some interesting interactions (sort of gesturing Tourette's which would fit in well with the general twitching). That would be for volume up. Volume down just stick a thumb down. Decline a call. the traditional Agincourt archers sign for up yours. I see nothing wrong with this. Theyd sell more phones after their users had been beaten up and existing phones smashed.

My only wish is they will change the plastic material of the earbuds or the eartips. So many people have allergic reactions to Airpods including me.
