iPads and laptops should be banned period! Make children use those ancient skills like reading a book and handwriting.... just my opinion...

Oh I agree. These silly iPads and iPhones are such a damned fad. Hopefully they go out of fashion soon and kids can get back to their abacuses and paper, the way all things get done!

Lets be real, the conservatives won't be happy until the poors in their comprehensives are taught bare bones skills to get them into apprenticeships, the poors who go to grammar schools are taught to be quiet civil servants and let everyone else with a proper private education get on with learning enough Latin to lead the country.

Make no mistake, this is not about bullying, this is not about addressing the causes or medium for bullying; this is about restricting access to internet connectivity and controlling how the lower classes are able to elevate themselves. Handwriting was treated in the exact same fashion in the past, but of course it's traditional, so it's a good thing, as opposed to new and modern evils.

Which is why I only let my children read hand-illuminated monastic tomes.

It's good to get rid of them. I don't want those kids to be dumbing down like Tim Cook. They should focus basic skills.

The problem is bullies not iPads. A knee jerk response is to take the tablets. The underlying issue is not properly addressed.

People hitting others with rulers. Solution: ban rulers. People stabbing others with pencils. Solution: ban pencils. People hitting others with elbows. Solution: ban people. People waiting at certain times outside schools to beat up others. Solution: ban time pieces. Solution to everything: ban humans. Addressing the causes of bullying? What do you think we are!?

You damned conservatives with all your facts and logic!

These devices like the iPad are doing nothing more than turning children into dumbed downed spoiled brats. Confiscate and let them learn to solve mathematical problems, read a book and learn to write a decent composition using pen and paper. If they want to use a computer, sit them in front of one where you know you can easily manage. The iPads problem is, it was never designed as a multi-user device, its a personal device. iOS still doesn't have multi-user support yet. Apple I believe recently added support, but it still does not go the extra mile.

Finally, these are luxury devices, if the parents can't even afford them, don't get them hooked on using it at school then go home with temper tantrums to their parents balling for one. Sometimes, I feel these things are solutions looking for a problem. 10 to 15 years ago, when I was in school, when Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, Surgey Brin, Larry Page, Mark Zuckerberg were in school, they had to do without Tablets. They still ended being intelligent, successful people.

Here in Jamaica, the Tablets in schools program has turned out to be a disaster. Students immediately circumvented the security restrictions and started going on social media, downloading adult content.

Nothing beats the good old pen and paper. When they want a Tablet, let them go earn their own money and buy one.

I'm not a schoolteacher but it only takes a modicum of empathy to see how disruptive smartphones and similar devices can be. Even some adults can't understand how rude and ignorant they are when pulling out a phone to answer a call or text message during a conversation. There is no mention of 'banning' them and this article doesn't even begin to put the statement in context. Just another piece of junk journalism to get the usual culprits worked up.

The devices are not the problem. It's the teachers and parents that aren't doing their jobs correctly.
The devices are not the cause of the problem. But they do allow bullying right under the teachers nose, during class. And likely lots of other distracting activities.

How about an app for schools. Students log in. Teachers can see their work. Classroom use restricted by login status.

Typical of the moronic approach to education in the UK. Rather than educate children effectively, let's find another excuse for poor standards and punish the majority for the indiscretions of the minority. The UK is the country that used a pathetic, amateur and poorly researched "report" on truancy to justify turning thousands of its citizens into criminals simply for the "crime" of taking their children out of school for a few days because its the only way to afford them in off-peak season. If the quote is correct it illustrates the piss-poor quality of intellect within government. Quote - ".....and so on." Seriously, a minister can't think of anything specific and relevant to say so simply says "and so on". God help the kids in the UK.

Believe it or not this happens.
There's no point saying "This is ridiculous, bullying will always be there, this won't get rid of it".
While it is clearly not the ultimate solution that will end bullying, it does get rid of cases involving iPads.
Some of that bullying can occur without an iPad but that is arguably easier to deal with and gets down to the real issue.

Are you complaining about the schools mentioned that rely on iPads for 'learning' or the fact that they want to limit iPad use? Because really, all they want to do it stop iPads from being the centre of teaching for the teachers.

I'm complaining about the lack of leadership / support from government. Kids get a lot of education around cyber safety and stranger danger. If there are local issues regarding bullying that is for the school/parents/governors to sort out - it isn't something that needs central government interference. Some kids get bullied so "lets ban ipads" - that is not a smart reaction - IT / social media is an inescapable part of everyday life now.

How about addressing the root of the problem??
Get those students educated. Actually, education starts at home.
Bad parenting is usually the main reason why children become bullies.
Other children look for adult sites because they haven't received good guidance from their parents.
Another reason is that parents allow them to associate with the wrong crowd.

Hilarious.

"There's something wrong with our kids. They're bullying each other."

"Naw, it's just the iPads. Remove them and the bullying will stop."

smh

Hmm well I can see where this usual MacRumors members level of intellect and maturity is going...
You all may as well go and flush it, make sure it's totally gone.
I think it's more the level of intellect of the article topic - mainly, this is a stupid idea because it doesn't target the cause and bullies will find other ways - and the surprise someone, you, actually agree. Nobody should agree with this lunacy. If someone wrote a mean note, do we ban writing? So why then when they type something we ban the technology to type?

Are you actually out of your mind? You're either completely mental, or you're too old and out of touch with the modern world.
