Orchestrating a shortage is good business. It makes the product seem like a sensation that one ought to purchase now or one won't be able to get it for who knows how long.

It worked for the Wii.
Yeah, it's a great idea except for the part where people can't actually "purchase now" because there's a supply shortage.

And the fact that you bought into the same conspiracy theory regarding the Wii doesn't exactly bolster your argument. I mean, if it's such a great business idea, wouldn't there be a lot more examples than the Wii and a handful of Apple products? It's not like the idea is patented or anything.

How can they be selling any iPads??!?

This product is a failure. THEY ALL SAID IT WOULD BE A FAILURE. Now look at it. This news is fake and propaganda. No way it could be real: those analysts are smarter than Apple and Jobs and consumers.

Ballmer's psychiatric bills must be enormous by now.

My iPad shipped on time...

...from the factory in China. I ordered a 3G about two weeks ago from the Apple store online and was told it would ship within 5 days, and be received 5-7 days after shipping. Everything is still on time and I am waiting for delivery.

I went to my local Apple store, which was of course sold out. So, I ordered one last night on apple.com, and was told it would arrive on June 9th.

I then re-visited the store today, and they had a new shipment of iPads, which I immediately bought.

So, June 9th vs. today? I'm quite happy :)

One Apple store representative indicated that the in-store reservation system typically takes 4-7 days.

That sounds kind of optimistic. It seems as in-store reservations are taking at least as long as the on-line store orders. There are, of course, a lucky few that seem to have received theirs sooner. I wonder if the retail store size also determines the wait time.

I've asked every Apple store in Houston about approximate wait times, and every single one of them has told me 10-14 days. Without exception.

Don't get me wrong, I'm an Apple fan, bought my first imac in 2000 and would love to get an iPad.

But I wonder if we realize the true cost of the products we demand these days? To bring consumer electronics to our stores and homes at price points which we consider 'affordable' (even if Apple detractors describe the current suite as overpriced and overhyped), Apple is contracting with manufacturers which have labor practices many would deem unacceptable.

For example, see the new stories for Foxxconn, maker of displays for many Apple products, where the 9th employee has just committed suicide. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/asia_pacific/10137101.stm

I'll keep a paper towel under mine to catch the dripping blood...

australian apple store now indicating ipads will ship in june, not june 7th.

yes but that could be simply for orders placed now. just as after a certain dates US orders no longer shipped by the release date.

Im pretty sure there hasn't been any international shipments of the iPad yet,

probably not, since it releases on the 28th

Makes you wonder if Apple priced it too low?

folks are already beeyotching about the "Apple Tax" especially on the 3g models (forgetting that there's licensing fees along with the actual hardware)

Maybe they could've bundled some accessories in with the first tranche? Like the apple case, dock and headphones and bumped the price by $100

and then folks that didn't need/want that stuff would just be all over the world complaining about Apple forcing them to pay more to get a 'bunch of junk'

This is in a high-scale mall in Los Angeles too.

The Grove?

After the the old lady incident of paying cash for iPad. Here's the news came right away that they're running out of iPad?

the shortages are not new. they have been running out since like day 3. of the wifi models

Where are all of the geniuses from the other thread who said that Apple shouldn't have any limit on iPads? Apple can't even keep up with demand, and that's with the limit in place.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Just got an email saying that my 64GB WiFi iPad, ordered in the UK on 10 May, has shipped. I have no idea if it'll arrive before the official launch day (28 May), though.

Yeah, I forgot about the iPhone debacle. That was ugly.

Maybe they could've bundled some accessories in with the first tranche? Like the apple case, dock and headphones and bumped the price by $100 (at a manufacturing cost of maybe ~$30)? That would give the early-adopters less reason to grumble when the unbundled iPad arrived months later for $100 less.

Hindsight is 20-20, huh? :)
AAAAAAAAAAArgh! No no no. Forcing people to buy extra stuff they don't want just pisses them off even more. Apple is handling it the only way they can handle it. If they could've predicted the future then they'd have ramped up production faster earlier, but predicting the future isn't always easy.

Signed up for a 16GB Wi-Fi+3G at the Apple store in Maine Mall about 2.5 weeks ago, because the staff there assured me that "it will be a lot faster than the on-line store wait" (which was then 5-7 business days). A week in, broke down and bough the iPad from a third party. Finally got my notification yesterday.

Does anyone know if the waitlist inventory is managed centrally by Apple or by each retail store? That is, does Apple send more product to any given store that has more customers on a waitlist or do stores get some pre-determined amount based on say, store size?

My 3G64 is in Memphis(ordered April 11)!
Too bad I'll be at work when it's delivered tomorrow:(

I'm glad I ordered mine on day one of international pre-orders. The site said Delivers by May 28, and then it changed to June 7, and now it just says June. I am glad my order status still says May 28 :) I think it's hilarious all the "iPad sucks it will never sell people" This is one of the first forum threads where I haven't seen a bunch of Apple haters bashing on the iPad because it's bound to be unsuccessful. It's so nice that they are gone...

Best Buy in San Diego all out of 16 gig Wi-fis last Saturday when I was in there, some guy wanted to buy one. ;)
