I'm in the process of upgrading my Iphone 7Plus to a Iphone X. I've had my 7plus for 1 year now and its been in a UAG Monarch case the entire time.
I actually loved that case and was going to buy another one for my new Iphone X.

However...in order to upgrade I have to return my 7plus and turn it in. So I took the case off and noticed it left marks all over the back of my phone.
I figured those are the typical marks you can clean off, so I got a microfiber cloth and started trying to clean them off. But nope, after trying and trying (different but gentle methods) I looked very close and noticed the marks are literally ETCHED into the phone !! And you can clearly see the honeycomb design from the case.

I'm always very careful with my phones. I've never had cracks or scratches in all the years of having different phones and cases. Some of the phones I've turned in or sold were far older then that and looked flawless.
Now, this phones back looks HORRIBLE. And all I did was keep it in this case for a year. Completely normal use, nothing out of the ordinary. Now I'm pretty sure this phone will not be accepted the way this looks. Leaving me stuck with a phone I can't sell or turn in.

So what to do ?? I can "buy" the phone from Verizon for $400 something dollars so that I can upgrade. I can't sell it that way. Or I'm simply stuck with this phone in this condition. This is really un-acceptable and I've never had a problem such as that. I have heard of cases not doing a good job of protecting a phone, but actually damage it ??
Seriously upset now!

I'm sure some will say I've somehow "caused" this to happen, or that those marks can be cleaned. I assure you, they are etched in. And I've done nothing "strange" to this phone or case at all !

If you search old threads... The UAG cases have been doing that for years.

Sorry I don't have any answers though.... just support that it wasn't your fault.

Edit:

Have you tried rubbing alcohol? Or those wrapped lense cleaner?

Last.. I would try a magic eraser.... this will most likely leave micro scratches... They are like a super fine sandpaper that removes a top layer..

That's why I said to try it last... but it might make it look 90% better... try a small spot first.

That sucks :-/ . Problem is the case is sitting that close to the phone, dust that gets inside the case gets between the rubber and your phone and just pushes it in, with yours being the jet black it marks up straight away.

Ive noticed on my X already that cases are marking up the stainless steel band.
It won't mark like that on the X because the back being glass its much harder than the polished finish on your phone

The best advice I can give is take the phone out of the case once a week and just clean the dust off the case and the phone.

My X was in a case from day 1 and by day 13... the lightning jack area of SS was completely scratched up... and that was without ever using a lightning cable in it... Always wireless charged.

I bought a wireless charger to avoid plugging my X in and will only use the AirPods to avoid scratching it hahah

Is Monarch the one that has a folio cover? If so, mine did that to my matte black 7 Plus and I was able to buff the marks off with isopropyl rubbing alcohol—it took a lot of time and “elbow grease”. I also gave them a bad review on Amazon about it. I was going to return the cases I got, but I ended up needing it for a hike and the case actually saved my iPhone when I slid on some rocks on a steep decline on a trail.

I never knew it but have recently been reading that TPU cases mark up aluminum and glass.

Amazon sells back films and tempered glass backs for the iPhone X. It won’t save the band from case shenanigans but it might save the back glass from getting pitted. However, I know nothing about what the adhesives might do.

Edit to add: I just looked up the Monarch case on Amazon. Okay mine is the folio version. I presume the lining in mine and yours is the same. Let us know if you are able to get the marks out using alcohol. Since you have the shiney black phone proceed carefully on a small section and see how it turns out. I think this is some sort of chemical reaction so alcohol makes a good solvent to get that etched residue out. That’s my guess anyway. Good luck.
