Do you plan on going to arrive at the last minute or early? What do the other options charge as compared to a for hire cab?

I think the question would be do u want to arrive their alive or not at all ..

I'd rather trust a cabby then the others. Although anything could happen as well... Uber has not exactly been honest in terms of issues with customers.. Can't see any complains from using taxi's or very little...

Still depends on distance,, because they still charge allot.

Do all of them,,,, and see who gets to pick u up first ... then choose

So, I wonder what my $30, 11 mile cab ride to the airport would spec out using Uber. Is it as simple as a rate per mile?
For what it's worth, I often take rides 12-15 miles away from my house and they usually average out to around $12-$15. $1/mile is by no means the formula they use, but it works out that way for me often times.

Around the same here!

There's no way I am choosing Cabs. They charge more, most drivers have no idea of what customer service means and cleanliness could be a BIG issue. I usually prefer Lyft if that is not available then Uber. I value transparency and the ability to provide feedback which has been always taken very seriously by both Lyft and Uber in all of my experiences.

I used Uber while away on a business trip. I found them to be responsive, quick and less expensive then a taxi.

I can understand why Taxis are having such a hard time. I paid 12 dollars to get to one section of SF which was a flat rate. If I had taken a cab, it would have been double if not triple because of the time we sat in traffic. I paid over 40 dollars for a taxi ride to the airport a couple of years ago, this time, I took Uber and it was around 25 bucks.

Same here, I was recently at a convention in downtown Seattle and each morning I would go out to the front of the hotel and order the Uber, there were also many others doing the same thing and all the while there were taxi cabs just sitting there waiting for someone to jump in, I sort of felt bad for them.

So do you all use Uber or Lyft when there is a surge or prime time ?

I did on the way home from the convention center, it turned out there was a Seahawks game that day and the price was double what it was each previous day.

How much did it end up being total? Did you give a tip ?

Mostly. I simplify things by using the same option - about 1/2 my recent flights into SFO (11-12[?]) hit the surge rate, didn't care, got to my hotel quickly and safely. :)

It averaged about $4.50 per trip (it was like 7 or 8 blocks) but that day it was around $8.00. I used Uber and there was no option for a tip that I saw.

Its in the settings last i checked, though they may have changed things around. It used to be you set an automatic tip in the settings which doesn't exactly make sense if you have an awful driver.

I generally use Uber, Lyft in my area of Boston tends to have less of a wait time but perpetual surge pricing. Lyft tends to be slighly cheaper without surge.

Both companies seem to be a lot more expensive than they were not too long ago.

Uber and Lyft remind me of Netflix/iTunes whereas the cab companies remind me of Blockbuster and Sam Goody/Tower Records :D

When I'm in Boston... Lyft gets priority, unless there is prime time. Uber gets the nod there because it is always cheaper than Lyft during surge pricing.

Between the two apps, I prefer Lyft's better UI. Uber is too cluttered these days. They even updated it recently to "hide" how much the surge pricing is.

Except cabbies in urban settings know where they are going. Uber and Lyft drivers stare at their GPS like they have never been in their hometown before.

Uber and Lyft will be much more viable when the cars drive themselves.

I can agree with that comment to an extent. I've taken over 100 rides now, and 90-95% have been quick and efficient, while the other 5% were as you mentioned - driver was clueless, taking poor routes, driving dangerously, etc.

I don't use Uber anymore after hearing how they exploit many of their drivers in various areas. As for clueless, I have had drivers in the past who didn't know my area. They even told me that I have the option to pick a route or they will refer to their Uber map. One guy lived a few cities away and had dropped someone off in my area before picking me up. At that time, I was grateful the driver was around. He didn't know my city at all and was able to get me to my destination fairly timely. Though it wasn't the route I might have taken it was doable. I don't blame the driver for not being familiar with my area. To do so is just silly. As for driving dangerously, never had that happen but agree there is no excuse for that.
