    Hi, I have the 15 inch 2.8ghz 4gb ram 7200 320gb HD Unibody MBP.

I upgraded form a PB 1.67 that was haggard. I used the ethernet to do the upgrade so I could have my photos, itunes etc still intact but I didn't transfer apps.

I'm now having a problem with the permissions repair function and I think it could be causing a slow computer (itunes bounces maybe 6 - 8 times before openeing, iphoto 7-9 times and firefox around 13 times after boot up). Now there is nothing strikingly faster about this computer than the G4 1.67. It's got me thinking that there must be something not quite right. Could it be the permissions?

I did a permissions verify, followed by a repair followed by another verify to see if it was repaired and it said this:

    Verify permissions for “Macintosh HD”
    Reading permissions database.
Reading the permissions database can take several minutes.

As you can see, a giant circle of not being repaired. I did the same thing with OSX install disk inserted and it didn't seem to help.

Can anyone suggest what is going on here?

    Thanks.

I had a similar experience when I ran Disk Utility. After a couple of attempts I simply reinstalled the OS and customized the install by eliminating most languages, print drivers and unused applications. Now I find that Disk Utility and Permissions runs quickly and I have a little more open space on the hard drive.

So you think that is the problem?

I'm fairly reluctant to reinstall the OS because it means re-authorizing several iTunes accounts on my computer to listen to music that friends have gifted to me!

It'd be nice to find a solution to this problem. But as you say, if the solution is a reinstall then so be it.

    Urgh.

Did you notice your computer running noticeably faster after you did a custom install?

I got the same permissions problems. I tried everything short of reinstalling from scratch. Not doing that, hopefully a new update will clear this out

I wonder what this can be related to?

Do you think the speed of your computer is being effected by this permissions issue?

An update won't "fix" the issue. If permissions can't be repaired/verified, it's something more than a "update" can fix.

Doubt it. Look at permissions as something that helps applications load and the computer to boot in some cases. So if anything, if permissions are corrupted or incorrect, you'll experience application errors so the speed of the computer shouldn't be affected.

    Okay.

So should I take from the fact that the Apps with permission problems aren't crashing then it isn't really that important?

It's just annoying - my powerbook with Tiger whenever with permissions problems was easily 'fixed' with the repair. I'm starting to not like Leopard because there just seems to be a hell of a lot of little things that detract from it's greatness. Not to mention it's size!

Is it possible that when transferring all my stuff from the PB I brough it's problems with me to the new system? Do fresh installs actually do any good?

The permission errors that say "they are lrw-r--r--" are nothing to worry about.

According to the second post of this thread, it's just Disk Utility found symbolic links when .bom says real files should be there. So no harm at all, and it has nothing to do with the slowness. If your laptop is unusually unresponsive, your laptop may have a different problem.

Cool thanks for that information and link. Information included in it showed that my permission errors aren't errors at all and that the only error is that they are being displayed at all.

It's not that the computer is unresponsive, just no way near as quick as I'd have imagined when upgrading form a 1.67ghz G4 to a 2.8ghz dual core intel! A massive difference I'd have hoped!?

Yeah I can totally appreciate the bugging part of it. Knowing that something isn't quite tip top is pretty frustrating.

So it is down to Apple to find a solution to this problem?

Before calling AppleCare, would recommend a reinstall of some sort. They're going to waste time asking you do things that are pretty much irrelevant and ultimately will tell you to do a reinstall. If perform a reinstall and you still have a problem, then they'll most likely tell you to mail it in but seeing how your problem probably isn't hardware related, a reinstall should fix the problem for you.

A reinstall would consist of doing a fresh one - so an erase and install not archive (assuming that brings with it details of the old system and therefore old problems) and install?

Like said before I'm fairy reluctant to do it all again after just getting totally adapted to the new computer.

Maybe, as some have suggested, I'll ignore the problem because it is clearly a common issue that Apple are working on to fix...?

You could do an Archive and Install but to eliminate software problems, I would recommend NOT to preserve settings and folders. All your stuff will be saved but you would need to manually put the folders and files back. And what fix to what problem is Apple working on? Disk Utility not being able to repair some permissions? This isn't unusual. This happens to all computers not just yours and has existed for a long time - it didn't just start happening in Leopard. If Apple IS coming out with a fix, that's the first I've heard of it and would think, where was this prior to Leopard if this was such a problem?

Reading between the lines on this thread from this site (second post):

    http://www.macfixitforums.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/464389/Re_Repairing_Permissions_iTune

I'm lead to assume that Apple needs to do something to rectify the permissions database because what is portrayed to be wrong on disk utility is in fact fictitious. The only error is that an error is being displayed at all...

I don't really know anything about this, but it is just what I have gathered from doing a little reading.

I see what you're saying. I guess you guys can call it an "update" to a non-problem. From that thread, the problem is Disk Utility is saying that permissions differ when it shouldn't. Second post, the problem will be people asking about the "problem". 10.5.7 will fix that but anything installed after that will result in the same problem. There will always be a time where Disk Utility won't repair the permission and you'll have to wait until the next update to fix that.

    Gotcha.

I guess I'll just hold tight. Seems like the best (read: easiest) thing to do.

With regards to the install and archive/erase and install and not preserving preferences - will that mean that iTunes library data be lost and I'll have to re-enter passwords to enable me to play downloaded songs from iTunes?

I tried to find out this information before, but no matter where or looked I could never find a definitive answer. When I copied my stuff from the PB G4 I did loose all the passwords on my iTunes library music - so would that mean an archive could deliver the same issues?

Thanks - this is a bloody helpful thread.

Yes and no. If you don't preserve settings and folders, your whole user folder will be moved to "Macintosh HD\Previous Systems" (includes, desktop, pictures, music folders etc.). Your passwords are in that folder in a file. So unless you know which file to restore the password, you will need re do all of that unless you go ahead and take the old user folder and overwrite the new one. For iTunes, it shouldn't be a big problem to re-authorize for playback. With every reinstall, it would be a good idea to have some sort of backup just in case.

Okay yep - so kinda what I expected. In order to get a 'fresh' computer it is, by default, necessary to not bring over your passwords etc from your old system - unless you manually find them (beyond me, no doubt).

Reauthorising isn't an issue for me, but for the people who gifted me the music can be a bit annoying. You only get the 5 activations and after that you need to cancel them all in order to authorise more computers. It is obviously no particular issue, just an annoyance for them more than me.

Shame there aren't any easy ways (except for converting all the music to MP3 format (which for some of the albums requires burning to CD then re-importing) taking some time!).

I am starting to wish I'd not been so curious in the first place and gone on quite happily ignoring the problem! Ha.

This blog post may help you forget about it. Discrepancies in permissions are not that big a problem in the first place, and repairing them would rarely if ever fix a problem if you have any. If your new laptop is not slower than the previous one, probably it has no issue.

It doesn't hurt to know. This would be something to know, we get a lot of customers calling in saying permissions won't get repaired thinking they need to be or there is a problem. Sometimes people need to have every single thing "work". If your computer is running fine, small things such as permissions, you shouldn't even look into it.

I've been seeing the Front Row app permission errors too, I think the iTunes/Front Row update that came along at some point changed permissions without letting whatever reference Disk Utility uses know that they've been changed.

Yes about 95 percent of the issues are Front Row, Itunes and Ilife 09. It clearly is on a lot of machines. A friend also has it on his MacPro so these certainly look like they came from updates
