While I probably wouldn't buy one myself, I just don't see a need of it at this time, Apple will definitely hang back and see how it plays out for the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

The only foldable phone that I could see myself buying into in the reasonably near/mid-future is something along the lines of the Motorola Razr where the idea is to give a size advantage rather than anything to do with overall screen size. Additionally, a foldable iPad on the other hand… I'd probably buy that.

What's next? A foldable phone with a hinge and a physical keyboard on one half?

Nobody wants a bendable phone. It adds nothing. It solves nothing.

What a silly comment...

I'd love one, why you ask: I'd love the idea of not having to bring my MacBook or iPad on vacation to do some photo editing of the photos I've just taken there.

The problem: I don't want to bring another device because I need a bigger screen.
The solution: A foldable iPhone that works as a regular iPhone but also give me that bigger screen real estate when I need it.

How does this solve nothing?!

Why do you naysayers always think you're speaking for everyone when you don't like the idea of something?
And getting a few likes on your comments really doesn't mean anything, it's just this toxic community on this website that likes to reinforce their simple-mindedness by liking each others' comments.

Yeah, the Samsung one sucked and we'll see if they have improved it. But Apple is taking their time and is trying to make a product we actually want to use. So why the f are you so against that? It's simple, if you don't like it, don't buy it. Why waste your time by giving attention to something you don't want before it's even announced?

What about a non-foldable solution: a screen slides out from a tray that's inside the body of the phone, raises up a few mm, and snaps to the edge of the original smaller display? Could possibly use a magnetic connection for that. Of course, that would mean probably needing to have that magnetic edge "turn off" when the second part of the display is hidden. Depolarizing the material could be rather tricky I suppose.

Of course, this idea neglects the logistics of how one would power that second display, in terms of connections and general circuitry.

But...why though? What does folding add to the experience?

Maybe Apple will go a whole different route, rather than bendable/foldable displays it will allow multiple devices to snap via magnets to for a matrix larger display touch surface along with shared computational power. Image two Ax chips working together when attached or work independently when detached.

Imagine when having a single device running iOS and when attached to another iOS device the extra screen real estate make it automatically switch to iPadOS. Now extend that concept and a keyboard is magnetically attached with a third iOS device it gives you the option to either run iPadOS or macOS lite.

That would be innovative in the mobile OS crossover desktop OS space.

People just see what other companies have done and have no imagination. :p

So honestly everyone gripes about about not innovating but yet most people on this thread just complain and has a lack of vision. This is a natural evolution when the tech is ready, why not have 2 devices in 1, that was the premise of the iPhone music plus phone. How about tablets plus phone. I didn’t realize this thread was so narrow minded.

Honest question to those complaining: what do you want to see in the innovation column from Apple??? Don’t just say “fix this already or Mac update xyz”, real innovation, what do you want to see them working on?

First I will say that I was NOT one of those complaining...I was just reading comments and came across this one :)

Now, as for what I want in innovation...I really don't know. That's why I'm not as rich as Steve Jobs (was). But if I had to throw out a few uneducated opinions:

1. A real solution to long term personal cloud data - meaning the basic free iCloud account is a joke and actually causes more trouble than it helps, and given the tens of thousands of dollars I have paid Apple over the years I personally feel like a true data storage solution that is included with my loyalty to the Apple ecosystem would be huge. Yeah, I want something for free. There I said it.

2. Fix healthcare - more programs that integrate their devices and data to better health outcomes.

3. Stop wading in the kiddie pool regarding the home automation ecosystem - Apple has always prided themselves in being a complete ecosystem, what with handoff from phone to computer, airplay to the AppleTV, Homepod/Siri, and HomeKit, but frankly it's still a little half-baked. Think of all the sci-fi movies where a person walks into his house and actually has a conversation with the technology in the house - we are far from there.

Am I too late to make the joke that Apple already released a foldable iPad and iPhone? Dammit.

Everyone can become a predictor these days, you just need to pay the media to promote your lies.

FYI, you're on a forum, people have different opinions, like/dislike what others say.

Right now folding displays are not the answer, it might or not become reality, also depends if people like the idea, if it's not cumbersome to carry or use.

I agree. What could this possibly add that would be attractive? The device folded will likely be thick. The folding mechanism and screen will be subject to excessive wear. Apple has had enough trouble with durability issues -- particularly the iPad Pro. This is a solution in search of a problem.

Despite the upvoted posts saying otherwise here, folding smartphones are indeed the future of the category. The appeal is very obvious. A tablet sized screen that can be carried in your pocket. I absolutely believe Apple will release a folding iPhone in 2021.

I see the appeal of folding devices. Folded you get the phone experience for using the device quickly. Unfolded you get a tablet experience for productivity or entertainment.

However, this tech is no where near ready for daily consumer use.
I was wondering how far I’d have to scroll for a voice of reason.

Anyone who doesn’t think the surfing the web, reading News, watching video, gaming wouldn’t be better experiences on a larger screen AND those are the main uses of smartphones these days, just aren’t being honest. But yes, unless Apple has a supplier in super stealth, 2021 seems early.

Lot of people hating the idea. Like the look from the show “WestWorld”. I would be interested in the idea I could have a smartphone and tablet in one. Probably wouldn’t get v 1.0.

There’s zero practicality to this technology and why would we go back to moving parts? Just like the manufacturers trying to shove 3D televisions down our throats a few years back, just plain useless.
And how! =)
This is akin to 3D television... kinda sounds cool. In reality: finicky, complex, expensive, adds very little.

edit: haha, @Fanboi4life beat me to it.

I disagree, it's nothing like 3D TVs - they are obviously useful if you like 3D, but you are perfectly at liberty to ignore the function if you aren't interested, and it added very little cost to the device at all. And it's scandalous the feature has been removed from newer TVs for no good reason.

Having your phone fold in half is not trivial and depending on the implementation could completely alter the way you have to interact with it, and it's hard to imagine it's not adding to the cost of the device (or else attempting to justify high price points that seem to get higher and higher).

Still, if it was just an option for people who wanted it, fine.

Not really needed. I haven't seen a compelling use case at this point. Along with quality issues, the tech just isn't there yet. We are 2 years away so it's possible, but I don't see the point. Continue to invest in Apple Watch and AirPods, we don't need more screens in front of us.

Save this thread for when Apple comes out with one and see how many change their minds and think it's the best thing since foldable cheese.

More bendability could help people who keep their phone in their back pocket. As long as they face it the right way.

I can't wait till Apple releases a foldable device and the Macrumor users gush about how amazing it is and how Apple invented foldable devices. :D

Anybody remember how people on these forums thought the Samsung Note series was too large?

Apple will follow Samsung again larger displays that fold.

Most likely Apple will do it's usual job of providing an amazing user experience that is matched by none and Samsung will do it's best to copy Apple.
