Has anyone found a fix or workaround? No matter whether it's a Windows based laptop or Mac, when I open the files app, web browsers, I can resize and position the open windows. When I close them they will revert to their default position and I have to start all over again.

Modern Ubuntu installations default to the Wayland display server rather than X11. X11 supports the applications being able to remember their positions and reposition themselves when reopened, whereas there is currently no intrinsic way to do this in Wayland. Ubuntu is phasing out X11 but, depending on the version you have installed, you may be able to use an X11 session instead of Wayland (chosen when logging in). Otherwise use an add-on like Auto Move Windows to position them in Wayland.

TY for that information. I did find a workaround in Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS by installing Gnome Tweak and enabling the center window option. Now all windows open in the center of the screen but any changes will get reset by Gnome Tweak. It's better than nothing, I guess.

Odd that ubuntu does not pre-install gnome tweaks. I found that utility to be quite helpful and handy
Yup. that's the only way I'll tolerate gnome. With gnome tweaks though, I find myself preferring it to KDE.

It's not quite ready yet, but COSMIC is my favorite.
