Uh, it’s cold.

We had a few weeks of colder temperatures in the -10º to perhaps -29º F. in Fairbanks, Alaska, but so far it has been a very pleasant winter. Monsoon coming to the interior of Alaska now, and by the end of last week the temperatures reached the "teens." Right now (1:55 PM, Sunday Dec. 8th) the temperature is 15º F. The forecast calls for 29º (-1.67º C), with temperatures in the low 30's and high 20's (0º C to -1º or so). Then it starts coming down by Friday. As January nears, it could get quite cold since December, January, and February usually are the coldest months of the season.
Below -16 degrees F I wouldn't go outside unless it was colder inside the house.
I can't imagine International Falls, Minnesota with -40 degrees F. I would imagine that the thermometer doesn't even want to wake up to take a reading.
😁 Yes, -40 degrees temperature (where F meets C) is not pleasant at all. It happens now and then in the interior of Alaska, but it seems that the trend at the moment is toward warmer winters.
This winter we have had days of -32 degrees F (near -2º C) occasionally for a couple of days, but in years past we have had over one entire week and longer with temperatures of -65º F (-53.85 C). Last winter the thermometer registered -40 degrees in some areas in and around Fairbanks, but not for a very long period of time. "Minus" 30 degrees as the coldest are becoming more common. The ambient temperatures in the outlining areas of Fairbanks tend to be lower than the elevated (hilly) areas or Fairbanks. But occasionally we have warm fronts sweeping through the low areas (sort of a valley) and moving toward Fairbanks.
The coldest temperatures recorded in Alaska (long ago) was somewhere around -80 degrees F.

This winter we have had mild temperatures in Fairbanks, Alaska. A few weeks ago the temperatures dropped to somewhere close to -30º, maybe -32º F, and then we had warm temperatures as low as 0º to sometimes as high as 28º above zero F. Just today it was about 9º F, but starting tonight the forecast shows the following -36º F (-37º C):

I get that Alaska has a lot of natural beauty and there are people, such as yourself, that either tolerate or downright LOVE the weather year-round up there.
But looking at those temps in that screenshot is enough to make me never want to move there for any reason. That's just too damn cold for me.
Ha I have family in Fairbanks. I've been to Alaska quite a few times both in the summer and winter. Alaskan winters are a whole different level of crazy 😂 Oddly enough though, having been there in the summer and winter...I'd say I would prefer winter with the main reason being the daylight (well, lack of it). The constant daylight in the summer is hands down my least favorite part of my trips up there in the summer. The Midnight Sun was cool to experience the first time...but I found that it got very old VERY quickly 😂 I just couldn't find anything to enjoy about there still being daylight in the middle of the night 😂 Now to be fair, the long darkness of the winter is something that I also found to get old quickly...but I enjoyed that more than the constant daylight.

Well, winters aren't bad unless it is extremely cold and one is not able to be outdoors, specially if it is dark like it is now at 3 hours and 15minutes of daylight. Somewhere around midnight the forecast shows temperatures from -36º F to -40 (from 2 to 3 degrees under -40º C
Then a little warmer starting tomorrow through the rest of the week. Somewhere by March, there is plenty of daylight and warmer temperatures for one to stay outdoors and participate in winter activities of various kinds. When it is cold like it is now I don't even drive short distances to take photos of the Northern Lights, but do so when the temperatures aren't lower than perhaps -10º F. During the day in March there are a few winter events such as sled dog races, skijoring, and things like that, plus warmer temperature. Sometimes during these events it can be quite cold, even -20 to -30º F, but all one has to do is to wear the appropriate "winter gear" for the occasion. I usually park my truck nearby, and keep the cabin warm by starting the engine with a remote, get inside for a few minutes, and then return to take more photos for a few more minutes. I do understand that cold temperatures like the ones in the interior of Alaska aren't pleasant at all for most people 😄

My wife and I enjoy winters. She prefers cool summers with not too much sunlight, while I enjoy summer to the fullest, specially the long hours of daylight when I am outdoors driving and taking photos of wildlife. We lived in Sacramento, CA years ago, and she disliked the hot summers
Fairbanks is not very picturesque, but drive toward the hills or mountains around Fairbanks, or even toward Delta Junction, Summit lake, Valdez, etc., and it is nothing but spectacular.
