Takes care of the "OMG, I have to manually type the long url instead of copy and pasting it."

apple's solution for this problem takes only 1 step, copy and paste 2 ;-)

Hmm, Address Book seems to only allow for three numbers per contact. Say I have you down with a work, cell, and home number. If your work number changes how would I change it in the iPhone?

I was thinking if they did have the cut/copy/paste function, you could do the highlight by dragging then swipe to cut. Just swipe again on where your cursor is and there it goes.

For larger blocks of text you could hold down one finger at the start, and another finger at the end. It highlights everything in between, you swipe to cut.

To copy highlight the text, and then double tap on the text. Again, to paste, just swipe your finger where the cursor is.

What do you guys think?

The problem is it may not be as simple as just a software patch.

On WM-based PDA/smartphones holding down the stylus brings up the copy/paste sub menu. I believe on the iPhone if you hold finger down on a point, it has another function (forgot what?). So, how would they go about implementing the copy/paste sub menu? All the hardware buttons are used up, unless they create a new finger gesture?

I hope this is fixed, makes it near impossible to send links, news stories, etc to friends through email.

Apple said specifically that with the iPhone it would be extremely easy to add software features in the future. I'm sure that if they want it, they will add it without problems

Easy, just have 'Copy' and 'Paste' buttons appear once text is highlighted.

More Gestures

I suspect Apple will introduce more GESTURES to the iPhones repertouire of finger movements.

Apple has patents on many different trackpad gestures as can be seen on Hrmpr.com Published April 5th, 2006, included here are Gestures for copy and paste plus many more, it would be very very cool if more of these Gestures could be used with the Apple iPhone.

I don't think having the SDK will let people do anything for the core UI functionality. That's something Apple themselves no doubt want sole control over.

I can't say there has been a time when I've need to use copy/cut & paste...... if you need to port a link be it weblink, email address or phone number there is always an arrow to port it into contacts or safari..... where else would you use it ?

Here's why I need copy and paste:

  • Text a contact's address, phone number, email to another contact.
  • Text or email an address from Maps,
  • Copy a long password/username that I have stored in notes/email for a website.
  • Some websites tell me to type in activation code as well, so I have to switch between Mail and Safari or write the number down on a piece of paper.
  • Copying some text from a website to send via text or email.
  • Copying text from a website to notes for different types of projects.
  • In Safari I find an RSS link I want to email it to myself or add it to Google Reader - this bit really annoys me. I have to send the website to myself via email, with a note reminding me to search for the RSS link and add it to Google Reader.
  • When I'm filling in forms on the web, need to copy email address and phone numbers over.
  • Copy a text message or a portion of a text message to send to another friend.
  • When I'm reading some blogs or news sites and people mention web addresses without properly formatting them in html and safari doesn't recognise it as a web address. I have to manually type the address.

I'm sure there are more as well . . .

I have to say that this is very disappointing from Apple.

I was very interested in an iphone at launch but thought that the 5/6 month wait till UK release would actually be a good thing - bugs fixed, UI improved etc...

It does seem that the things that people have complained about for months are just being ignored - I was optimistic from everyone's responses previously - "It'll be fixed in an update", "Don't worry it'll be updated soon", "Easy fix!"...

Now we are 6 months down the line and these simple, basic things (copy/paste, mms, multiple sms) are still not in the phone.

I imagine Apple are now too preoccupied with fixing Leopard than fixing the iphone - perhaps they are short staffed?

If there was some indication from Apple that these would be fixed soon then I'd probably take a risk and get the phone for Christmas, but I haven't confidence at the moment... anyone heard anything concrete about when it may get fixed?

Here is how I would use it - to copy info from email messages to Notes. I use Notes alot, but there is alot of information that I have on my PC, that I have to type over (travel reservations, etc.). I would love to have a true Notes Sync with Outlook, but in lieu of this, I would settle for copy/paste with email.

How many software updates and still no copy/paste?

I simply won't buy an internet enabled device without copy/paste. I use it multiple times a day on my treo 680.

I would love to dump my annoying, buggy 680 for a hypePhone. I could even put up with the lack of 3rd party software (no ssh client! argh!) and lack of flash support, but copy/paste I won't give up. it's far too basic and important, especially at $400.

How hard could it possibly be? :(

Anyone reckon this will be included in a minor firmware update at Christmas? Good time for an update with a lot of new sales and the prospect of new custom in the Jan sales.

probably too risky. how many updates apple has published just this year just to have to publish another one couple of days or weeks later to fix the bugs in the update.

imagine what "oh apple broke it" instead of "yay new features" would do for the christmas sales...

I am glad i bought my 4GB on the cheap. I have no faith in any company putting out continuous updates that dont help them bring in more revenue. They were in a rush to release the wifi iTms but can't implement copy/paste? or mass email deletion?

The whole blind faith thing is not my style.

When you send out a mass text, does it count as one text or does every recipient count against your total? If it counts only once, it could explain Apple's reluctance to allow it. Forces users to upgrade to unlimited texting.

I got some news for you. The whole purpose of the iPhone and anything that the iPhone can do is revenue related. If you didn't understand this that first day when you took it home and had to connect it to iTunes to even activate it, then I'm not sure what to tell you. Any future features added beginning in February will be for sale via iTunes and Apple gets a nice bite of that.

If there are any updates till then, they will be very small.

Why February?

Apple added the iTunes WiFi Store for free and I wouldn't consider that a small update.

It wasn't and I didn't say it was small. It is however a revenue generating feature and that is the whole idea behind the iPhone. People have to realize that.
The 1.1.1 update also included a slew of other changes that are not revenue generating. How do you explain them?

And again, why February?
