    Afternoon all,

Preordered my Ipad 3G, obvioulsy there is a lot of speculation on the new Tarrifs which will be coming out with them here in the UK.

However i do already run two iphone contracts on my business, currently one of them is not being used? if i were to trim it to size would it be useable in my Ipad?

are O2 going to know its an ipad if i'm just using it for data and not calls?

    Thanks

This is something I would also like to know!

I currently have Mobilebroad band contract with O2 which I do not really use, so Im wondering if I can either chop the sim card or if O2 would give me a micro sim for the use of this, as Im gonna be paying the monthly fee anyway.

    Thanks.

Yes you should be able to do this. Others have already reported success in trimming down their sim cards. If possible I would go and grab one of the free sim card packs many places give out just so you have a card to practice on first for safety.

I trimmed down a 3g O2 mobile broadband sim down and it works in my iPad 3G. It was fiddly I held my breath when inserting it into my ipad, but thank god it worked.

As long as you are paying your bill, not going over your allowance, and using the same APN for accessing the internet, O2 will not be able to differentiate. Usage wise it's up to you if you make calls or just access data, as long as they are getting paid I highly doubt they will give a monkeys left testicle.

I hope this works because I have an unopened O2 PAYG sim pack (received with a 3GS last November) which includes 12 months unlimited data -it needs activated by 23rd June, so perfect timing!

Yes, you can trim it down. Yes, O2 will be able to detect the device its being used on. Whether they will care or not I can't say.

Out of interest how can they tell ?

Does a devide id or some such get transmitted.

My mobile broadband is was sim only, so it was up to me what device / hardware it was to be put in. Hard to imagine they would get fussy over a certain device, but maybe they could

I have two simcards that work in my ipad. One is a 3mobile payg 12gb preloaded chip. The other is an o2 iPhone payg chips with a years free Internet. Both work fine.

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is transmitted. The IMEI is of the form

    AA-BBBBBB-CCCCCC-D

The A's B's and the C's let them identify the manufacturer and serial number of the model.

I suspect that O2 haven't picked up that you are using an iPhone SIM in an iPad. Once the iPad is officially launched in the UK I will bet O2 will want you to take out their 'iPad' contract.

I don't think they will care. What difference does it make to them?

What I'm interested in is the following. Getting an O2 or Orange iPad contract and using it in a MiFi (http://www.three.co.uk/Mobile_Broadband/MiFi_plus_iPod_bundle), but using the WIFI hotspot access on the iPad.

I have a wifi iPad and an unlocked 3 Mifi. It's a pretty good solution as it means I can share the mobile broadband contract with my PC. and if I could use the free WiFi Hopspot part of the account on the iPad, then it's best of both worlds.

It also benefits from the fact that the iPad sees it as a WiFI access point, so allows stuff you cant do over 3G to work over it, like TV, TVCatchup works a treat!

    Cheers
    Paul

The difference is that they will otherwise miss out on an extra opportunity to gouge -err, i mean charge- you for data! You know how they are ;)

By the way, I just purchased a 'Three' MiFi and need to unlock it -any tips for me? Thanks in advance.

Remember to activate it in a phone/laptop as relevant before you chop it down to fit the iPad!
