UK, Activation/Unlocking

Can someone tell me the way to activate the iphone in the UK so i can use the ipod/wifi features? And the unlock it so i can use it on O2? I am using Windows XP and ive looked through various different ways of doing it many are too complicated, but i either cant do it...or it doesnt work :/ Also is there a good version of the itunes and firmware i need anywhere to download?

it's a Friday and as so i'm being lazy. Search my username and you'll find a link to a set of videos i uploaded to YouTube that'll show you how to do this. I now have 3 iPhones working fine on O2
