Backdoor way to introduce a mandatory ID card.
And that would be a bad thing because… ?

Mandatory ID cards are a reality in most developed countries and I see no issues with them. The government already has any information associated with them so it’s unclear why some people don’t like the idea.

Since when? First I’ve heard of it.
Maybe it was a requirements in the past, I very much doubt it’s still the case, especially considering many insurance companies don’t issue any physical document and it’s all digital and linked to the number plate.

The UK government today announced plans for a digital wallet that will house digital driver's licenses. It is not yet clear if the digital wallet that the UK government has planned will integrate with Apple Wallet, but UK users will be able to access their driver's licenses through a GOV.UK app on the iPhone when the initiative launches.

The digital driver's license will allow users to prove their age when purchasing age-restricted items, and it will serve as proof of the right to drive. Personal information will be protected with Face ID or Touch ID for security even if a device is lost.

Along with driver's licenses, the UK digital wallet will eventually include veteran cards, DBS checks, and other documents issued by the government, but traditional physical documents will also remain available.

The UK digital wallet app is launching alongside a GOV.UK app that will feature a built-in "GOV.UK Chat" chatbot that is being created in partnership with OpenAI, and the chat service is already being tested. The chatbot will let UK residents make payments and receive notifications and reminders about government services.

In the United States, Apple has partnered with several states to bring digital driver's licenses and ID cards to the Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch. Digital IDs are available in nine states, as well as Puerto Rico. At least six additional states have pledged future support for the functionality.

As someone in the UK, I can be fairly certain that it won't integrate with apple wallet, as government IT projects are always done on the cheap with no consideration for future proofing or end user convenience. I hope I'm wrong.

I only carry my wallet for my ID and credit cards I never need to pull out. Digital ID's would be beneficial to me in my state when we finally get them and I'm to old to remember how to use my phone.

But people don't have to use it, they will still have their normal driving licence and the I.D thing is for people who want to prove their age when being age restricted products.
It is not going to be any more than that, at the moment. Even if the U.K did have compulsory I.D, it will take years, look at what happened the last time they tried.

Makes no odds to me, I don't drive and unless the person serving me when I buy beer is blind, they will certainly see that I am old enough to buy it

Again the UK gov investing tax payers money duplicating ID wallet already available on iPhone and Android 🤦‍♂️ Why not use the wallets already out there and add driving license to those like some US states already have?
Except it’s not available yet

“Later this year🙌”

You don’t even have to carry your insurance by law either in the UK. The law states you must be able to produce to a police officer on request. Normally given 7 days to do that just like your licence.
Not within 7 days. The law makes no allowance for the typical producer period.

Failure to produce when requested (including license) is committed at the road side when you don’t have it.

Whilst every police force will give you time to produce, they don’t have to.

Yes, they do have to give you seven days - see Section 164 of the Road Traffic Act, 1988:

“8)In proceedings against any person for the offence of failing to produce a licence F2... it shall be a defence for him to show that—

(a)within seven days after the production of his licence F2... was required he produced [F32it] in person at a police station that was specified by him at the time [F33its] production was required,”

In Australia, we’ve had digital drivers licences and digital Medicare cards for years…shame no Apple Wallet integration.

The .GOV website says otherwise:

If you’re stopped, the police can ask to see your:

  • driving licence
  • insurance certificate
  • MOT certificate
If you do not have these documents with you, you have 7 days to take them to a police station. You’re breaking the law if you do not show the requested documents within 7 days.

Victoria (state) in Australia did the same thing. There are two separate apps, Service Victoria and myVicRoads, that are both cumbersome and bloated. Every time they update the apps, you have to re-login, go through two factor, enable biometrics, put in pins — it's just terrible UX and implementation. Why Apple isn't making it easier for those outside the states to have licenses on their platform is flummoxing.
From the VicRoads website.
Currently there's no timetable for being able to add your digital licence to your Apple or Google Play wallet but keep an eye out for this in the future.
So there is hope as I would love to delete another app.

In Italy starting this month all citizens may have their driving license and other documents digitalized through an app, unfortunately not available on the Apple wallet.

not true.
currently there is no legal requirement to carry any of your docs whilst driving (or any sort of identification).
you simply have to prove you have them within a reasonable amount of time, which is currently set to 7 days.

There’s no mention in the law of 'a reasonable amount of time' - it simply states '”within seven days”

Yeah. having read a bit further the additonal '.gov wallet' is completely unnecessary. I don't think I'll bother with it if its like that and just be stubborn and get the traditional card as I already have for the past 26 years. Its easier for my employer to photocopy to have on file and when hiring cars etc anyway. What a waste of our money producing an unnecessary app.

I have never heard of someone being dealt with at the road side for not carrying license or insurance though. A producer is standard practise and if a police officer issued a penalty in this rare instance, I am pretty sure it wouldn't stand in court due to it being rather unreasonable and outside the guidelines of the Road Traffic Act. It clearly states you have 7 days to produce documentation.

Its not the UK is behind the times, this has been in discussion here for nearly a decade, they just never bothered to do it due to other priorities in the public sector. The ability and technology has been here for many years.

Have you maybe looked at why they did this or are you just slating them without knowing any deets?

This is untrue.
