I've been watching catch up TV exclusively from my Roku Streaming Sticks dotted across the various TVs at home. We had everything wired up for Ethernet last year so planned to bulk buy the new Apple TV to move to wired but lack of apps killed that plan. I'm trying to hold off but may just end up buying some of the new Roku equipment which includes an Ethernet port.

For what it's worth. The Roku is perfect for the cord cutting - excellent solution. Makes me think why I actually want to wait for Apple TV to get sorted.

If you really about cord cutting then have two TV or more TV boxes and be more concerned about using the best Antennas for your location!

And pretty much everyone has one - I'm sure there are some obscure options out there but the antenna pretty much gives everyone the same set of channels.

Absence of the full set of UK TV catch-up services is the reason I haven't bothered with the new Apple TV yet. But even if it gets them, there will still be an issue of whether or not it will ever get Amazon video.

As has already been alluded to in this thread, Roku boxes have the best breadth of uk-relevant services including all terrestrial catch-up apps, Now TV, Netflix, Amazon Video, and two or three other significant movie rental vendors. The Roku has to be considered the best choice for UK-relevant content.

Sky's Now TV box is a nice cheap alternative if all you want are the terrestrial catch-up channels and Now TV, and are OK with being limited to 720p output.

Samsung's smart TV platform is surprisingly good in terms of apps, but Now TV is frustratingly absent. Similarly, lack of Now TV is a problem that would keep me away from Amazon Fire TV.

Samsung TV is good in terms of apps but the app quality leaves a lot to be desired. Especially since they're now marching ahead with their tizen platform leaving behind there older platforms.

More months go by and still no ITV Hub, no All4, no My5, no Amazon Prime Video, no SkyGo, no BT Sport and Now TV is still chugging along with the crappy port from the ATV3. Yet all are on iOS.

There is something wrong isn't there?

While there might be plenty of ATV owners in the UK, I think it purely boils down to them all concluding that there isn't a big enough demand for their apps in the ATV format.

You're certainly not going to get Sky Go or BT Sport apps on there anytime soon.

It's a dead platform, unfortunately. content providers will write apps for the most popular platforms, and I imagine for platforms which are willing to pay. As Apple have never cared about the Apple TV outside of America I suspect they aren't so much as talking to UK providers about supporting the ATV. Look at the total lack of UK specific siri functionality on UK ATVs for any example of just how disinterested Apple are.

Smart TVs will clearly make these boxes irrelevant soon anyway, all of which have full or nearly full UK lineups because TV manufacturers realise how important such things are. Apple don't, and never will.

Totally agree, even NowTV, Plex and YouTube feel like an afterthought....

YouTube can't share/sub

Plex requires you to press the back. Button a million times to just get to the main menu.

NowTV has great content but lacks any extra info aside a thumbnail and short description. Plus back button issues too.

I use my Apple TV all the time, love it, but it has so much more potential in the uk.

It is frustrating. I have a Samsung smart TV so all the things I use (ITV Hub, All 4 and Amazon) that aren't on the Apple TV yet I can easily access directly from my TV. But I would still much rather be able to access them using the Apple TV.

Yea but I would love Amazon to sell the Apple TV 4! If you really look at the whole situation it is Amazon playing games so users would buy the Fire TV!

Except that Amazon sell the Roku, which has an even broader range of content than the Fire TV does.

I urge everyone to add their name to the ITV Hub thread on itv.com

https://itvhub.uservoice.com/forums/247805-the-itv-hub/suggestions/10898274-itv-hub-for-tv-app-store

If ITV jump on board, that only leaves Channel 4 and 5, who would almost surely follow suit if the two larger players are on the aTV platform.
Done! I really hope things will change in the UK for Apple TV, it is a great little box. Unfortunately outside the US it is a bit boring when it comes to content or even the lack of Siri support (in some countries), despite them being sold with a Siri remote.

I have just been reading this thread with interest and wonder why so many persevere with the Apple TV. I got rid of mine before the latest version was even launched because of lack of Apps. While the latest version 4 is an improvement it is still very limiting and assume the only reason to hold out is if you are wedding to movies from Apple.

Between my Samsung TV and a ROKU i get everything I want. I have no need for movies from Apple when I have Netflix and Amazon. I am very much into Apple with a Mac mini as my HTPC, a 13 inch Mac Book air and an iPad and iPhone. But will not get another Apple TV unless there is a major enhancement that brings additional benefit over my existing arrangement. I am also a Sky subscriber but this is mainly for Sport since I am both an F1 and football fan.

I think a lot of people would have bought the ATV4 with the assumption that content providers would line up to make apps for the store like they did with the iPhone and iPad.

I'm glad I resisted the urge and held off. Until it gets a Roku-beating line up of apps, the only valuable thing the ATV provides for me is Airplay, and my old ATV3 provides that just fine.

You can add a fair few to catch-up services to the plex server

That falls into the same category as Airplay - a bodge which shouldn't be necessary. Consumers shouldn't have to jump through hoops.

Roku and the Fire TV offer all UK services in a single box. Apple need to start throwing some money around to convince UK providers to support the ATV if they don't want to lose what market share they have left. Then again given the state of ATV Siri in the UK I doubt Apple really care.

Well i'm probably one of the few that isn't bothered about the lack of UK catch up. We don't watch broadcast tv at all and so have no interest in watching their programming on an on demand basis either. We watch very few big name shows via the (barely usable) Now TV app, but the overwhelming majority of viewing comes from Netflix. Binge-watching shows is the future of television.

Likewise, but I do watch plenty of BBC via iPlayer. Still, there's no arguing that the terrestrial broadcasts still make plenty of popular shows, and as such, a full line-up of catch up services is no brainer for any streaming device. Not having them on the Apple TV does rather boggle the mind such is the level of naiveté and frankly arrogance Apple has to non US ATV markets.

I notice that Apple are now promoting Now TV as a core ATV service, after years of barely mentioning it. Content is king but Now TV for the ATV is uniquely awful. It's not exactly state of the art on other platforms, but the ATV has been given a truly terrible Now TV app which is by far the ugliest and least functional streaming app ever created.

Now TV on ATV is awful. What confuses me is that Channel 4 News have released an app (maybe their only app on a TV platform) yet All 4 remain quiet.

I can live without them due to having a smart tv and a PS4 or using airplay. But it certainly isn't ideal. I know sooo many people who wanted to get the new Apple TV but couldn't bring themselves to buy it knowing the main catch up channels aren't on there. They all got Amazon ones instead.
