Will be keeping it or the boy takes it. either way, I'll have a Xr or X in the back of the drawer for this time of the year.

both will support iOS 16 for a good old while so will get plenty of use from it.
It's always handy to have - might do it myself actually, this iPhone 7 is on it's last legs

the boy has rejected the Xr as its... wait for it... red!

have reset the Xr and decided to do the full phone to phone transfer for set up as I can't be dealing with the faff.

will leave the whole 'starting from fresh' for the 14.

a few weeks of the Xr should also make the jump back up to the pro that much sweeter 😂

edit--

might even go careless with it for a few weeks!

interestingly, the Xr was from amazon via a company called Ur.. ur.co.uk.

they buy phones too and offering £719.50 for a 13P 256 and £730 for a 13PM 256.

Looks like they won’t touch 128GB or 1TB for some reason 😂

Good shout on the CEX case sell. Popped in earlier and got my £53 cash after using for 12 months!

This time looking to sell my iPhone 13 Pro 128GB on eBay than MM. MM quotes have significantly dropped... and once again the question is 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max? Always gone with the Pro since the 7 Plus days maybe this time Pro Max model

Also thinking about stepping up to the Max. A little bit concerned about the weight but sure it’d be something I’d get used to

just out of curiosity, if some users on this forum upgrade yearly isn't the iPhone upgrade programme a good plan for them? just looking for opinions...

Personally I don't like not owning the device - I much prefer to have the flexibility to be able to chose to do what I want with it, but I get why some people prefer the approach of the IUP

On the upgrade program, you do own the device - the program is a loan for the full amount of the product, which you pay back in monthly instalments. You might consider it rent, but I am not sure

I don’t really understand the difference between iUP and the Barclays interest free finance. I used the Barclays loan last time for the first time and plan to upgrade this year. I’ve paid off the loan early and will sell my 13PM when I have the new phone to pay myself back, plus make £200. My impression of iUP is you can do similar but you have to deal direct with apple which probably gives a worse trade in value and less flexibility

The Upgrade Programme is also somewhat restrictive in that it adds Apple Care on top of the monthly repayments. Some prefer the flexibility of the Barclays finance, which spreads it out across 24 months and gives you more flexibility on Apple Care (don't take it, pre-pay in full, pay each month etc).

You can still settle the loan at any time by selling the phone privately and paying back what's owed. Just giving the phone back to Apple often leaves money on the table - usually in the region of £100 - £200 depending on the phone and when you sell.

You won't really own it until you've paid the full loan amount though as it's technically a finance agreement. In essence the finance is settled when you hand the phone back in after 12 months and you then start the process over again

£5 more now than what I paid but

(not sure why that is in French!)

Thanks, if you want to sell when done, shout me - my daughter needs an upgrade ;)

in essence, the IUP and 24 month Barclays loan are the same thing.. both offer 0% finance. The difference, as mentioned above by a few are the terms that come with each.

IUP
in my opinion, aimed at those who want to spread the cost of a new phone over a period of months, who want to upgrade yearly, and are happy to give the phone back to apple and start all over again the following year.

IUP involves:
  • Apple Care is always added to the price (though you could just go and cancel it and get a refund for the remaining balance)
  • initial £69 up front payment required
  • total split over 20 payments
  • you can only upgrade (hand phone back to apple and start again) after the 11th payment
as said above by @mrandyyu, just handing the phone back to apple after 11 payments is not always the best value. In reality, the phone's value will be greater than your outstanding balance so you'd be better off selling the phone and paying off the balance and pocketing the difference. Also, with this, you can then cancel your AppleCare and get remaining balance refunded as well.

I'm sure there are plenty of apple consumers (clearly not us well-inclined folk :D) who would just give the phone back and not worry about selling privately etc but to me its a little work for about ~£150 benefit.

This is what I did before Apple started offering the 24 month 0%.

24m 0%
straight forward finance agreement where you split the cost of the phone over 2 years.
  • no initial payment
  • no need to take AppleCare if you don't want it.
  • no option to hand phone in with Apple and upgrade.
I moved to this deal when it became available a few years ago. Given I didn't ever just give my phone back to apple in the IUP, the benefits to me were:

  • flexibility of taking AC+ if wanted
  • spread over 24 months so slightly lower monthly payments (makes no difference as the balance at the end would be higher than on IUP)
  • biggest win was the ability to pre-approve. Apple didn't offer at the time (and I don't know if they still do IUP pre-auth) the ability to pre-approve the finance days before the launch. This made the check-out process much smoother and not having to worry about cards blocked by banks etc (which happens to so many each year).

at the end of the day, the overall cost to you would be the same which ever method you took (they're both 0%) so its a question of convenience. To me, IUP is now redundant.

you don't have to deal with apple. and the end of the day, the finance agreement is with Barclays Partner Finance for both. with IUP, Apple have tried to make it easier for the consumer to change phones yearly. They are happily taking a phone back after 12 months and settling the finance on your-behalf.. we'd just all rather it be us who pocket the difference!

finally got round to properly setting up the XR with all the apps.. funnily enough the XR is only using 52/128 GB whereas the phone I transferred from is at 84GB!

the XR hasn't downloaded many photos from iCloud yet which 3GB missing but I also see that on my 13P iCloud Drive is using 6.6GB whilst only 816MB!

it says 'your recently accessed files are downloaded to your device for quick access'.. no idea what 6GB of files I access regularly are! 🙃

time to reset the 13P and pack it away...

Also thinking about stepping up to the Max. A little bit concerned about the weight but sure it’d be something I’d get used to
same dilemma here yearly for me too... have tried (Half heartedly) to test the pro max size, but I've always gone back to the pro. the weight and overall bulkiness with a case on didn't work for me, Never comfortably used it one handed, which I can with the pro.

also when out running, its not the easiest to have to carry around (yes, I know I should buy a data plan for my new watch :D)

rumours seem to suggest the max will be a little heavier again this year.

the one nagging reason would be the change of circumstance in the past few years. I'm not commuting daily, so the awkwardness of carrying it around diminishes.. will be wfh and it sat on my desk 95% of the time!

dammit... now I'm thinking of changing to it too 🤣

I have the opposite dilemma every year 😂 I constantly wonder if I’d prefer the Pro and yet deep down I think I know I’d regret it and miss the larger screen and battery.
It is a bit annoying sometimes one handed, I’ll admit, but I tend to go case-less so it’s not as bad.
