Not my kind of character!! You can run your fingernail gently along the case and it scratches. My leather handbags and jackets do not do that!

The leather on the iPhone cases is very thin indeed.

I wonder if 3rd party insurances will cover replacement of the back glass? I have insurance through my bank. I wouldnt be surprised if they deemed it an unnecessary repair since not the screen!

I don't think that insurance through a current account at your bank will cover anything other than theft or catastrophic damage. The best way to guarantee cover is to have accidental damage on your home contents insurance.

Got my Anker wireless charging pad, the 5w one which was £11 with the promo code provided a few pages back.

For the price I’m pretty impressed, small and discreet under my monitor at work. Plugged into the back USB port seems to charge about as fast as with a lightening cable.

So my friend is trying to reserve an 8 for pickup instore but it only gives collection slots on the same day. This is via the Apple store app. Is that right? It’s not possible to reserve for collection say this weekend?

I think the deal breaker for me for AppleCare vs 3rd party insurance, is a full guarantee and the convenience of being able to take my phone into an Apple store to get the repair/replacement.

I appreciate that not everyone is 30 minutes from an Apple store, but for me, not having to deal with 3rd parties and be without my phone for x amount of days/weeks.

Imagine all the app devs who will now have to recode ALL their apps to run on a screen with a notch - that ain't gonna happen any time soon..... JUST WHAT WERE APPLE THINKING????

Agree with the comments on the leather cases. They look great out the box but soon get battered. The display cases in store already looked like they had taken some abuse. The saddle brown ones had scratch marks on the cases. I know it’s a natural material and some people will like the ‘weathered’ look but it’s not for me.

...don't forget that the leather cases in store take severe abuse - people deliberately scratch them and so these can;t be used as examples of real life situations! My old Midnight Blue leather case for my iPhone 7 aged beautifully. I had no scratches on it at all. Additionally, initially the leather case will feel slippery, but as you use it, the natural oils from your hands will gradually make the leather ALOT more grippy. On my leather iPhone 7 case, I could hold the phone, with all my 4 fingers on the back of the case, at a 45 degree angle and the phone was extremely stable. The leather naturally gripped my fingers.

Re the silicone cases...

I had a 6s Plus with a red silicone case and then changed to a black leather one.

I recently got an 8 Plus and picked up a blue silicone case from Currys for £17.97.

My observation is that although the phone is now protected from drops, it’s actually more slippy in the case! The glass ‘sticks’ well in your hand whereas the silicone doesn’t.

Better start saving for another leather one, lol.

I agree about the scratches on a leather case - I’ve had my 6S Plus in a leather case for 18 months now and apart from scuffs on the corner where I dropped it, it’s unmarked.

Just bought another for my 8 Plus 🙂

The darker leather cases seems to fair better. The previous leather Apple cases I’ve had have been the lighter saddle brown which shows marks clearly and the material naturally fades with wear and tear as expected.

I might be one of the few who’s just not bothered by the notch. Maybe it’s because I don’t watch stuff in full screen for long enough for it to bug me, always switch to the iPad Pro or MacBook for longer viewing.

I’m Contemplating getting Apple care in addition to my usual bank insurance.. I couldn’t go without the latter and have the risk of losing a £1000 phone. The additional I pay for it through the bank I’d keep regardless as it gives me the family travel insurance and breakdown cover.

If I do get Apple care then I might seriously consider using IUP because I do change devices every year. It’s all going to depend on availability. If I can secure close to launch the I’ll IUP but if I’m not getting the phone until say early 2018 then IUP would mean no upgrade for the ‘18 phones and a wait till 19. ( which might not matter as the 2018 might be delayed or launched later due to the delayed X... hmm decisions decisions)

Then I guess I would have to seriously destroy the phone to claim off my bank insurance. Maybe I'll think about the IUP to be on the safe side but no way am paying for AC in full upfront. Wish it also covered theft and loss so it was comprehensive cover. Am just generally against additional and extended warranties/damage protection although my friends young son did this to her brand new TV last week which is apparently not uncommon judging by her friend reponses on Facebook

I don’t think that’s quite accurate. The RBS group insurance provided by Aviva covers loss, theft or damage. The only exception around damage stated in the policy is.

“There is no cover for cosmetic damage to the surface of the phone such as scratches and dents, that don’t affect how the phone works”

RE: The silicone case - for the first few weeks, it's not 'slippery' but it sort of slides down your hand as you're holding the phone. It was bizarre. But after that period, it becomes really grippy.

I’ve just had an email from Envirofone. They’ve downgraded the quote for my 6Plus 64GB from £255 to £63. Apparently due to excessive wear and tear. There was nothing wrong with it, no scratches, no damage, no cracked glass, nothing at all.
I’ve called them and asked them to re-look at it and send me photos of the ‘damage’. This’ll be interesting.

I reckon they might be too. I wrapped it in 2x layers of bubble wrap, then put that in the box they provide. Then I took that box and wrapped it in bubble wrap again before putting it in the bag they provide. It was so well wrapped up it’s unbelievable.

Hope you get this resolved. Never heard of any issues from other forum members. I was concerned previously about the protection provided by their packaging but sounds like you addressed that sufficiently.

I echo this, I find Music Magpie very tolerant of cosmetic wear and tear. Have used Mazuma too but Envirophone never again.

Yes, the glass back is the question. That’s why it’s likely to be a combination of insurance to cover loss or theft and Apple care to make any glass damage repairs
