Hey guys.

My friend has an iPhone 4. He is selling it to me but it has a crack on the screen so it needs to be fixed.

It is still eligible to be repaired. I am planning on going to an Apple Store near me to get it fixed so I was going to make an appointment with the Genius Bar.

Now, what information will I need to provide? Like, what will I need to show them?

It's accidental damage. If it was a flaw in the manufacturing process, then yes, they'd repair it without cost.

If you want to pay for it, they will repair it.

From the warranty, located here (emphasis mine):
http://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/iphone.pdf

This warranty does not apply:
(a) to damage caused by use with non-Apple products;
(b) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, flood, fire, earthquake or other external causes;
(c) to damage caused by operating the product outside the permitted or intended uses described by Apple;
(d) to damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (“AASP”);
(e) to a product or part that has been modified to alter functionality or capability without the written permission of Apple; (f) to consumable parts, such as batteries, unless damage has occurred due to a defect in materials or workmanship;
(g) to cosmetic damage, including but not limited to scratches, dents and broken plastic on ports; or
(h) if any Apple serial number has been removed or defaced.

They will repair it but for a cost of $199, or about £150 for in the UK - not too good! As for what you need, I'm not sure, but would also like to know :)

So it seems like they will sort it out?

I wasn't specifically asking you if it would work, sorry. I know it will work. My friend is gonna sort it out tomorrow

NatWest cover my phone for loss, theft, accidental and malicious damage. So yeah, you should be covered with that.
As for Apple, I've seen a few threads here where people start spouting off rubbish about the Sale of Goods Act and Fit for Purpose etc...if you drop it, it's kind of your responsibility if it breaks.

Good luck though OP

Yeah well my friend is with the Bank of Scotland. He is sending it away tomorrow and he filled out the form. Hopefully, they are quick in fixing it. I don't even think it is a crack, it's like a <1mm think scratch. It's just the screen that needs replaced.

Also, the iPhone 4 is amazing! It feels so good in the hand!
