turned on my new iPhone for the first time 4 and a half hours ago and it still says on the lock screen "waiting for activation - this may take some time."

anyone else still waiting for network activation this late in the day?

    Micro sim

Daft question did you follow the micro sim activation set up?
you need to go onto o2 web site enter your mobile number get a code etc etc?
or the salesperson in store can enter your new sim number at the point of sale

If you are still having this problem you will need to turn off your previous phone along with turning off your iPhone 4. Then turn the iPhone 4 on and let it activate it. You can then also turn the old one back on if you want.
