If I buy a locked 3g iphone in the UK I presume it can be unlocked and used freely anywhere else?

Reason being it may be a good bit cheaper here

Nobody knows for sure. It took a few months to unlock the first gen iphone and each firmware update has taken a few weeks to crack. Having said that I'm certain someone will get there in the end.

Yes it can. Again as long as you can get a signal and have international usage. Otherwise its fine in just the UK.
