Interested to hear your views. I am already in the upgrade program and pay £71.45 for an Iphone 11 Pro max 256gb. I have used the upgrade program for a couple of years now. Due to the delayed launch, I have made an additional monthly payment this year and so only have £571.60 left to own the phone outright. In previous years this would have been a higher amount and so was a little less peeved at handing over a phone I could have sold privately for more money than Apple pay settle to the Barclays agreement. The issue this year. Due to to COVID19, quite a few people won't be able to attend an Apple store to use the apple upgrade program due to local lockdowns. I wonder how they will handle it. I would normally pre order and collect on day 1. But this year, I can't technically travel to the store and know that many others will be in this situation.

They’ll probably make it available online the way it is in the USA.

Looks like England is going into a national lockdown from Thursday, so unlikely we’ll be able to upgrade on launch day.
It’s going to be December before shops are allowed to open, so another months payment and knock on for next years upgrade.
There’s obviously more important things going on than a new phone, but this year is really pissing me off now!

I sold mine in the end, settled the iPhone upgrade program with Barclays so that I am back to square one. Apple are only going to offer the upgrade program in store so I will get the 24mnth 0% payments with Applecare+. Hopefully the world will be more normal next year so will sell it again, settle the finance and go back onto the Apple upgrade program. This way I can do it all online this year and get it delivered to my house. I managed to get £800 for my 11 pro max 256gb and transferred the apple care to the new owner

Im waiting to hear if i can join the program for the pro max or if we have to just buy the phone outright, either way really want to get the pro max so thinking if its worth waiting a month or not. Nothing saying it will suddenly be open december 2nd either. Will have to see what Apple say

Now that England is going back into lockdown I’m wondering what’s going to happen with this store upgrade situation here. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'd really like to know the answer to this, too. I wonder if like @akash.nu says, whether they'll make it available online... They'll need to do something if stores won't be allowed to open.

Makes me question, though, why they've not done it all online before now. You can buy phone contracts online, as well as other HP agreements. Guess they'll have their reasons...

Have contacted Apple, so will let you know if I hear anything back...

Apple Support have just told me they have no news yet (understandable since the announcement was only yesterday).

Be interesting what apple do as this could affect their sales for sure if a lot use this. Don’t think it’s that high though.

If they can class it as a click and collect they may be ok. It depends how bad the ruling is and how tight they are with it

I’ve never seen Apple trying to circumvent any local laws. Doubt it’ll be classed as click and collect because they do the physical exchange and credit check at the store.

I agree. I’m not even sure click and collect will be available and I suspect the stores will close altogether.

Is there an 'actual' time limit to how long a click and collect transaction takes ? Stores could be open only for IUP collections with strict arrival times ? The actual IUP doesn't take that long to process.

Either that or Apple may implement an online version and you then ship your old phone back ?

I don't think they'd be keen to delay the launch for a month ?

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for an online solution.

Seems to me they will just say either pay your phone off or buy a new phone without IUP.

Yeah I reckon that’s what you’ll have to do. These are unusual times that we live in.

I’ll probably not upgrade this year if this is what ends up happening.

Just don’t have the time or the energy to deal with people for a private selling of my current phone.

Interesting email from Pc World, Maybe apple would offer something similar -

You’ll have seen that the Government has announced a new 4-week national lockdown in England, from this Thursday to December 2nd. So from Thursday, our Currys PC World stores (with Carphone Warehouse shops inside) must again close their doors for normal shopping. But this time we’ll be able to safely allow you to order online and collect from store, with “zero-contact” Order & Collect. This means you can pick up from most stores without getting out of your car (just pop open your boot).

The big thing with the IUP is the 5 minute Barclays sign up using the Apple handsets.

Apart from that, they could insist the phones we hand are already wiped and sim removed (to save some time). But it's the Barclays bit that takes the time.

Thats fine as you have purchased an item on line and are using the store as a station to pick up the goods only.
