When you're reserving a phone on iUP, does Apple "reserve" the phone while you're placing the order? Say, you chose the SG X 256GB, and it shows you the locations it is available, you pick a location, click Continue and fill in your details. In the meantime, is the phone reserved by Apple? Like, by the time you finalise the process and click the Reserve button, you wont lose your place, right? It's not like you click the Reserve button and it throws an error saying "the phone is no longer available" or something, right?

That shouldn’t happen. The cookies are set when you put the item in your bag. So unless the transaction times out before you could checkout you should be fine.

Unfortunately, this can happen. There is a state for "This iPhone is no longer available at this store." if you're too slow at filling in details.

It doesn't use cookies. Your iPhone is only reserved the point you confirm the reservation.

An e-commerce user journey implementation can’t work without cookies. Now how they implement it is another thing but I’ve never seen any company not holding on to the item using cookies once it’s in the “cart”. There’s of course a time out. So it won’t be available for you forever but within reasonable time if you fill in the details then it will work.

From this line on the app I would assume that nothing is reserved until you complete the process:

That’s not a technical comment. They’ve just mentioned it there for the users. Any e commerce transaction will need to work in similar fashion. That’s how they know what you’re actually trying to buy & ensures that even if your total order completes after someone else but you’ve started the process before them then you get the item instead of the other person.

The time out on the cookies might be shortened during a pre order scenario to provide chance to more people but it’s still always a reasonable timeframe so that someone, who has already initiated a order, is able to complete it.

I’ll take your word for it, but I’m not going to make a cup of tea mid process. Reassuring to know but I’ll still order as if it wasn’t true.

Yes that will possibly mean it will time out. A reasonable time is really, to be able to complete the whole process.

If you’ve ever bought anything on Amazon deals then you’ll see it shows you’ve got 14 minutes to checkout from the time you’ve added that item in your cart. That’s the time out set in the cookies. After 14 mins the cookie times out and your item is released from your cart. Same concept with any other e commerce transaction. The only difference is the limit set for the time out.

Which details do you mean though? You don’t complete the credit agreement at the point of reservation. That’s done when you collect it in the store, or at least it was for the IPhone 7.

Think I’ll go for the upgrade programme this year, don’t think I can quite justify laying out 1200 in one go. Can someone summarise how it works at 08:01? Do I just go through the Apple website as I would if I were buying it and once at checkout there’s an option to reserve for store collection and sign-up to the programme? Or is there a different bit of the app/website I should head to? Thanks.

I recommend you go to the website and go through the motions as if you were getting an iPhone 8 on the upgrade program. It will answer your questions and familiarise you with the process so you can be as fast as possible on the day. I’d also recommend getting the Apple Store app.
