As said, just get insurance with someone other than O2 and then its not an issue, O2 insurance is a ripoff.

All these insurance plans offered by the likes of O2 and Carphone Warehouse are very expensive. The best (and cheapest) way to basically insure your 'phone is to include it on your household "contents" policy. If you want to go the whole hog and extend the warranty, get AppleCare too.

Regarding the free wifi, the wifi doesnt work on the phone number itself, it also registers the mac address of the iPhone. But there is a way around it all you have to do is, go to a BT zone or cloud zone, with the PAYG simcard in the iPhone connect to safari, and it will ask you to put in your phone number, put in the payg phone number and once its all working, you can take that sim out then as the next time you try and connect in the free wifi area, it looks for the mac address of the iPhone only then and not the phone number. Dont quote me on it but i am sure i have read this all over macrumours

You don't need to have the PAYG SIM actually in the phone. When you log into Cloud or BT it only knows the MAC address of your iPhone, it has no idea what SIM you are using. You can do it with a Simplicity SIM in the iPhone and just enter the PAYG number when you login. You can even do it with no SIM in the iPhone.

I can't find a simplicity 12 month contract for £20 a month. They are either 18 or 24 months and £30+ to get the internet bolt on.

Oh dear! Please read the preceding threads!

Simplicity is a Monthly contract. Prices per month range from £9.79 (150 min. 300 texts) to £29.38 per month (1200 min. 2400 texts plus unlimited web access). The cheapest with unlimited web access is £19.58 per month which also includes 600 min. and 1200 texts.

£10 a month?! That's crazy! You could get independent insurance for a fraction of that cost, and it will be underwritten by the same people.

Yeh I agree for sure, but all the experiences people I know have had with O2 insurance have been very positive. No usual insurance company BS, all phones have been replaced next day without hassle. I agree there are cheaper companies out there for insurance, but if they aren't going to replace my phone becuase I cracked the screen when Mars was in alignment with Jupiter or some shiet then its not worth having.

I don't have home and contents insurance, so any suggestions for phone insurance companies that cover loss, theft, accidental breakage and have a proven track record of paying up?

So just to ensure I'm hearing you right, you don't even need to do an initial "registration" with your PAYG SIM. The cloud network already has a record of your MAC from the iPhone because O2 provided it to them before you bought it and you can just log in using your PAYG number straight away? Do you need to top up any credit to activate the service?

You don't? With respect, if you are a home owner, you must be totally mad! What if you have a fire, burglary, burst water pipe etc???

All reputable insurance companies cover mobile 'phones and pay up promptly.

I rent, and anything of any value (ie cameras, laptop etc) is covered under specialist insurance for those devices. Clothes etc I couldn't care less about insuring.

It's funny how you used the words "reputable" and "insurance companies" in the same sentence :p didn't think they went well together. I was looking for specific recommendations, hoping someone has had to make a claim with one becuase as well all know the main aim of insurance companies is to not pay out if at all contractually possible.

I was thinking of doing exactly the same as the OP, for my GF.

I have a iPhone contract that ran out last month so I'm free to upgrade to the iPhone 3Gs and give my old iPhone to her and have her sign up to the 12 month Simplicity contract, which give you 800 mins, 1600 texts and unlimited data for £20 quid a month. She won't be interested in Visual Voicemail or tethering so it will work well for her.

Pretty good value I'd say! Glad to know other people have it working already too! :)

A bit of advice - you need to think about exactly why you want the insurance.

Having had a mobile stolen in the past, the cost of the overseas calls made by the thief in the few hours before I noticed it had gone far outweighed the cost of the handset, and paying the bill was very painful!

Many insurances (including household insurance) only cover the cost of the handset alone. You need to check what you are getting for your money, and think carefully about the cost versus the risk you are bearing. Only you can decide whether it is worth it in your particular circumstances.

Due to the fact that O2 contracts are rubbish and you can no longer get unlimited texts which i NEED i have been forced to come up with an alternative.

Option 1.

Pay & Go Iphone 3GS 16gb = £440.40
Simplicity simcard @ £19.58 per month on the 12 month contract gives you 800 minutes + 1600 txts if ordered online. You also get a free bolt on with the simcard, choose Unlimited web bolt on which DOES cover 3G internet despite what some people on here have been saying.

Over 12 months this would amount to:

19.58 x 12 + £440.40 = £675.36

Advantages:

- On this tariff your getting, unlimited internet access, 800 minutes/1600 txts per month.
- You miss out on wifi, however a Pay & Go Iphone comes with 12 months free wifi access. Even with the Simplicity sim in, when you try to connect to a wifi hotspot etc it asks for your mobile number, put in the number of the PAYG sim (even though its not in the phone) and it works, you get free wifi too!
- Works out cheaper overall.
- Your not tied into an 18 month contract, meaning that in 12 months time if Apple release another new iphone, you can get it immediately.
- You could sell the iphone when the new one comes out for what, £200-300? So it could work out effectively costing you about £300 for a years use of an iphone.

Disadvantages:

-Is a bit more hassle.
- You don't get visual voicemail or internet tethering.

Is all of this correct? Are there any other things i'd be missing out on by doing this, someone told me that i wouldn't get 3G internet only GPRS/EDGE? Can anyone out there think of any problems i may encounter/cause by doing this or will it pretty much function as any other iphone out there.

Heres the great deal I have on my iPhone 3G PAYG from O2:

O2 PAYG UNLIMITED:

£15 topup a month. Activates:

Unlimited Calls to O2 Phones
Unlimited Texts to O2 Phones
You still have the remaining £15 Calltime to spend

After the first 12 months of Free Web and Wifi, Get the unlimited web and wifi bolt on for £10 a month.

The bolt on is taken out of your balance, leaving you with £5 to spend on anything.

Texts are 10p to other networks, on contract they are 12p.
Calls are 20p for the first 3 minutes, then 5p/pm for the rest of the day to other networks, on contract they are 20p/pm no matter what.

On the minimun simplicity plan of £15 a month, to get the unlimited wifi, you have to add the £10 bolt on ontop of the monthly fee, working out to be £25 per month. Not forgetting you only get a certain small ammount of texts and calls.

All in all... For £15 PAYG a month you are left with:

Unlimited Calls to O2 Phones
Unlimited Texts to O2 Phones
Unlimited Web and Wifi
£15 Balance (£5 after the first 12 months)
Cheaper Calls to other networks than Contracts
Cheaper Texts to other networks than Contracts
Free Web and Wifi for the first 12 months
Cheaper deal than the contracts on offer

Not forgetting there no obligation to top up

And you are not stuck in a contract, isnt that good?

O2 insurance covers the cost of calls made on your handset. Up to £3k worth of calls on the top insurance.

From O2's website:

"O2 will cover the cost of unauthorised calls up to a total of £3000 for O2 Insure Premier and £1000 for O2 Insure Standard."

Not completely sure about this but you could try the following:

Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network: erase the settings after making a note of them in case you want to restore them at another time.

Plane mode with wifi on? SIM out? You want phone signal, but not wanting GPRS/Edge/3G being used for data? Maybe change one of the data settings perhaps to be wrong, so it only uses wifi?

You can call your network and ask them to disable data. My GF did this on her normal O2 contract, and O2 switched it off straight away.
