UK Price Increases - Your Thoughts

I recommend people learn more about international trade, currency hedge options and global multi-location manufacture issues before accepting what an IT journo with a caculator says! :p

That's why I subscribe to the Economist and not Macworld for finanancial insight and comment. :)

I bow to your superior knowledge. :p

Would you like to give us a summary of which parts Macworld have got wrong. And please try to use terms which the average person can understand. ;)

But were not talking about Energy or Oil here, these are consumer products and the fact they have priced a lot of people out surely is detrimental to their financial viability.

This is surely another sign all apple are interested in is the iPhone market. Vote with your feet (or rather mouse clicks) people.

I was considering selling my nearly 3 year old iMac and getting a new one this month before my applecare runs out. Now I definitely won't be buying a new iMac, just got to decide whether to keep my old one or build a hackintosh myself.

Whichever option I end up doing Apple loses my money. It's a shame really as I can afford any mac I choose, I just won't be ripped off - especially in a recession when I can spend that money more wisely.

It's quite simple. I've never purchased a new Apple computer. I likely never will. They're too expensive. Refurb's every time.

This just reinforces that view, and takes my likelyhood of ever buying new apple hardware - to near zero.

Dell machines have not gone through the roof price wise. Indeed, for £150 less than a Mac Mini, you can buy a machine with 50% more ram, 100% more HDD space, 50% faster CPU, proper discreet graphics and a BR drive.

It's just Apple that's still shafting people.

That tells you something.

My thoughts are...i wont be buying any Apple computer soon. There's paying a little premium and then there's the blatant slap in the face rip off!. The latter is what Apple is doing

Good thing i have a powerful system that will tide me over for long while

probably being to kind to apple here but....
have the really increased prices that much on the iMacs?

Before yesteday I was looking at getting the base level 24" cost was some where in the £11xx. Today, the base 24" is £1199, with more memory & HDD space with possibly poorer graphics. Seems to me (in the UK) they have basically removed the base level 20", and added higher end models in (i suppose these look rather higher - but are you getting more now for the money?).

What "got my goat" was when I read the headline from Tim Cook saying "you can now get the base 24" for the price of the high 20"" - only to discover that wasnt the case for me!

I suspect I am being kind as I need a new iMac and am trying not to feel like I am being conned!

I think the sad fact is that its not that we're being ripped off by apple but by the exchange rate. Although, apple has done the usual of removing the base config and introducing a higher one, in the mac mini, but I really don't know what has happened to the imac line, in the british prices its gone from being one of the most value line to being ,imho, seriously not good value

Strangely the laptop lines look to be the best value, especially the refurb MB Pros

Fortunately for the Mac Pro configuration that I want (Quad Core/4870/Airport) I can save £330 with my student discount.

This puts the price at slightly less than the £1800 which was the old 8-core with 8800GT.

I know its a quad vs. octo difference but people have said that the new quad core can outperform the older octo core.

The price increase sucks but I don't think there's anything we can do about it.

what has puzzled me most though is the increase what you try and up the clock speed on the Mac Pro, that to me seems to be the biggest clock increase per pound I have seen from apple

I know this is reflected in the high cost of the chips but spec'ing up a MP adds 2 thousand pounds for the 2.93 proc!!!! :eek:

Expensive times to be buying computers all round I think, which is sad for us all

Can somebody explain this?

Aluminum Macbook US, 1300usd -> 924gbp
Aluminum Macbook UK, 929gbp -> ~1300usd

so far so good... but...

iMac US, 2200usd -> 1560gbp
iMac UK, 1800gbp -> 2538usd

Now how on earth you get a disparity like this? I want my top of the range iMac for 1560gbp!

apple have consistently said over the years that they expect laptops to overtake desktops in popularity. They certainly sell more laptops!

maybe they are protecting the margin on the desktops as they sell less and are willing to be a little more aggressive on laptops.

maybe they are just trying to force the market to fit their expectations!!! Bit too cynical there perhaps!

I can explain. Expect a Macbook price hike soon. Especially if people stump up for all these new machines. Vote with your wallet.

The iMac is seriously strange one in the range now, I would say that the rerurbs, tc come in if there any left, are the way to go and wait for the next refresh when LED screens come in

I am seriously expecting this also, when the next refresh comes (which I would presume will be some form of the integrated battery from the 17) then we will see the price rise

Unfortunately I am not ready yet to upgrade but when I am, late summer, I feel I will be getting done on the price rise :(

I do still like their products as well but what I think it has left is no reason to upgrade. The performance increases aren't that major, and outside of the unibody no major case redesigns

I can see this possibly being a quarter of fewer sales. Personally I like to upgrade probably every other cycle but I can see myself having less to say that it's worth it.

Do I NEED another computer = No

Do I WANT another computer = Yes

Do I WANT another computer at these prices = NO

Sorry apple but these pounds will stay in my pocket until I NEED to upgrade

D

Yeah... where's the LED; maybe there will be another update on 24th :p

I'm trying to figure out what kind of setup to buy... iMac + Macbook or Macbook + Dell 24" + PS3 ;-) The trouble is i like to play PC games.

I'll wait till 24th and just hope they update the graphic card in 17" MBP... and if they did, I'd buy the damn thing regardless of the completely ridiculous price... (Geforce G130 would help rationalizing spending 2k gbp for a laptop...)

Personally I think the 17 MBP is the best computer to get at the moment in apple's range. Personally I am hoping that the advances will trickle to the 15 MBP and I will replace mine

D:apple:

I think it's a load of cock.

You can argue all you like about exchange rates. Fact is when the $ was a piece of poop compared to the £ for a good long time they didn't alter prices to reflect this, they just lapped up the massive margins.

Now things have turned slightly in the other direction they're only too happy to quickly ramp up the costs.

I'm extremely happy I'm not in the market for anything from them right now. Their current pricing, now more so than ever, is frankly an insult and I'd have an incredibly hard time convincing myself I'm getting any sort of value for money.

too true, too true

I would imagine that the UK has to be one of the biggest markets (outside the US) and it is really saddening that we are being punished but were never rewarded.

Well said edesignuk

It's actually quite sickening that in the US the price of the 24" iMac went down to the price of the previous 20" iMac where as in the UK the price of the 20" iMac has gone up to the price of the previous 24" iMac!!!

I'm sharing your thoughts lad !
I was just about ready this week to go and buy the imac 24in, 3.06GHZ, mainly because as a student (which I am), I have a discount from Apple so, I was only going to spend around 1240 pounds for it. Now, I have to find if I can ofcourse, around 400 pounds more in order to buy it. And I don't think it's really worth it.

Cheers

Quite glad I've just purchased a refurb MBP - a 2.4 so it's still top-specced in the entry-level class (phew!).

I can see the next revision MBP getting a nice little price boost a well...

Was waiting around for the Mini refresh, but buckled and bought a QNAP TS-509 NAS instead last month.

Along with my Popcorn Hour, it does the same job I would expect from the new Mini. And it gives me a whacking great amount of storage!

I've forgot about value for money loong ago ;-)

Now I ask myself the question - can't I even get the hardware I want? regardless of the price..

There is an issue in the fact that you could buy an iMac for £782 before yesterday and a Mac Mini for £391. Today well £949 and £499. The barrier for purchasing just got a whole lot higher 21% and 27% respectively.

Once you are over that barrier the differences might not be that much. However if you were at or near those barriers before it is a big big difference.
