Triple-click = back button

On the 2G you could find a song by shuffling until you found the album you want and then going backward or forward to the track you want. With the headphone controls is there is no longer a "back" button that I'm aware of. Maybe it's hidden in those cryptic morse code controls on the headphones. Not a very "Apple" UI.:(

Looking at the shuffle info, it appears as though to back up, you needed to triple click.

I am still tempted to get the current get device, since the 2nd gen would get flipped around on my clothing, and if I didn't look at the face, I would be pressing the opposite button...

All I Want For Xmas

is a new iPod Nano that has the same physical design as the current one but has 32GB (or better yet...64GB) of storage for ALL my music (and other stuff).

I've been contemplating getting a shuffle for a few weeks. This has settled it. Even if it is just for the earphones that are £25 on the apple site!

Not just a 'design classic'. The 2G was the epitome of design. The acme of form melding with function.
Apple shoud have closed shop after the 2G was released. They will never top its design.

Well spoken!

Actually I was planning on picking up one of the current model shuffles for listening to podcasts and music while exercising.
The deep discounts have me concerned that this may have not been a design with legs.
I recently saw a $10 discount at Best Buy in the states.
The comments here further my concern.

Can anyone elaborate on the weakness of design?
Is the cord-based control non-intuitive, or is it awkward vs the older circle-button design?

I would say mainly the fact that you practically need to communicate with the device in Morse code to compensate for the lack of enough buttons on the remote (which is a bad idea in itself.)

EDIT- just saw others had already posted similar comments. WTF is up with 3 clicks to go back? I think the buttonless Shuffle idea might have stood a chance if they came out with a new remote with more buttons. But they tried to shoehorn in full music player controls into a remote intended purely as a supplemental control device.

My concern was also that you are stuck either using Apples head phones, or other branded headphones with controls on them which I don't currently own.

Take That, Apple!*

*possibly UK-centric joke, sorry.

Sorry, couldn't resist! :D

design

I agree that Gen2 was a classic. All the elements communicated very well visually, the size was perfect, and the capacity was decent. However, Gen3 was sort of a design statement - Hey, FU! We can make an MP3 player with NO BUTTONS! How sweet is THAT?! Which I think is pretty funny and very Apple.

Shame that site doesn't display precise price cuts. I don't live near a Morrisons so I'm not going out of my way to look.

Head off to Hotukdeals.com for the gen. For the record, 4th Gen iPod Nano 16GB was reduced to £60, 5th Gen still at RRP. 3rd Gen Shuffle 4GB reduced to £20. Somebody also posted a similar reduction for an iPod Touch at Morrisons but unverified. Stocks of the above by now virtually none, anywhere.
