Why do none of my purchased songs show up as being ringtone available ?
I'm almost sure that I read somewhere that this is not yet possible on U.K. iPhones but I don't know why as we have the same firmware as the U.S. and have access to the same release of iTunes.

You do have the latest release of iTunes don't you (the one released just before the U.K. iPhone)?

Anyone else know?

They're not available in the UK as of yet, although I believe apple are working on it.

In the mean time, if you have the latest firmware, and latest version of iTunes you can create your own!

Just drag a song from iTunes to say the desktop.
Edit it in Garageband (or similar)
Convert to aac
Rename the .m4a file to .m4r
Drag back over to iTunes
et voila! It'll show up in your ringtones tab available to sync to your iPhone!

I've tried that, but it did not work for me.

The edited track needs to be under 40 seconds long - is that the problem?
