I rely on subtitles. BBC iPlayer for Apple TV never had subtitles all that time unfortunately. Options for subtitles did appear in past before but it never worked, it was Apple adding options on TVOS.

Awkward that Apple don't support the standard format but you would have thought the BBC would've done the necessary work to include subs on Apple TV.

People can live with out UHD, that isn't the case with subtitles.

I agree. All other services did manage to add subtitles and BBC iPlayer on Apple TV is only one I use that still not. Obviously it would be easier if Apple did offer standard subtitles format.

I can live without UHD I agree, I cannot watch it if it doesn't have subtitles.

Interesting but a shame the iPlayer app is total tripe on TV. Every time I load it it just says "Something went wrong", there's no 4K streaming, no subtitle support, no kids profile support… blargh.

The BBC view TV as proprietary and extra work to support, so have done the bare minimum. They had to be shamed into making an iPlayer app for TVOS in the first place, after a dev did their own version and posted a video on twitter showing it only took a few hours… 🫣
of course there is something wrong in the BBC iPlayer app. it is called BBC

Shame for the price it doesn't have sky sports in 4k, I'll have to stick with my sky puck and hope sky finally bring out a sky app like they did in Germany (sky go isn't the same)

Having had to deal with BT/EE, I have to say their customer service is unparalleled- the worst I've ever experienced! They stole money from my account after I ended my contract with them, and I wasted hours on the phone to idiots who kept promising it would be resolved, only to do nothing.

Unrelated to this, since their early days their channels have always had a strange image set up- too dark and too vivid. This continues on the TNT Sport channels when viewed on Sky. Sky's own channels are competently configured.

UK Sky haven't even bothered to update their useless Mac Sky Go app to work natively with Apple's own silicon.

To be fair that's only true of a minority of people. Sure, if you're deaf or hard of hearing then it totally sucks and no surprise you'd be pissed off. But I can't remember how long ago I last used subtitles on a TV (but it's years ago, rather than days or months). So for most people UHD is probably more important than subtitles, fair or not.

iplayer uses the built-in media player that tvOS provides, that's why it has the options for the various thing regardless of whether the stream makes them available.

I'm a bit baffled by this article and am trying to decipher exactly what this box can and can't do.

Yes, there are 3 boxes, but are they like a normal Apple TV box but with EE's software installed on it? And then, on top of this, do they also act like a Sky box where you can flick through live channels on BBC, ITV and other Sky channels? If all of the above, that sounds not too bad.

Unfortunately, either way, no matter how good or bad it is, my gosh it's bloody expensive! Once I done a full calculation of what I wanted, it came in at £85 (full package) + £30 installation, with 60mb BB. I currently pay Sky £50 for TV and Virgin £20 for 350mb BB. And no doubt the EE TV won't as good a user experience as Sky. And BB is way slower.

I checked EE t.v. packs.
Eurosport is tagged to SkySports which I no longer need.
I'll continue with VM Stream as Eurosport is inc' in Entertainment pack.

I have had bad experiences with EE in the past and wont give them a penny ever again.

EE Press release and prices

Price list reads like a sky package, £6 per month extra for HD / 4K... What year is this?

Edit. Also the remote looks like Amazon designed it.

I've been with EE since they were One-to-One (1996 I joined I think), then T-Mobile, and in all that time I've never had any issues with service or customer service. In fact, their customer service has been beyond exceptional and by far and away better than Sky, Virgin, BT etc.

I wonder whether existing customers would get a discount! Or maybe do some package swapping!

I'm going to give them a call next week and do a bit of research before my time with Sky comes to an end. Really do not want another extortionate 18 months with them!

Something I’ve never understood, is why don’t we have an equivalent to freeview play on the Apple TV? I know you can stream live channels in the dedicated apps but there’s no option for a service like this, where you can flip between channels with a live tv guide and the like and I ain’t paying for EE TV.

I might pay for a tv license again if this was possible

I thought the same. Sky Q contract expiring soon and I plan to ditch it so was exploring alternatives. EE TV is interesting with their Apple TV option but the monthly pricing is as expensive as Sky, so no thank you.

As a family that uses Apple TV for the majority of our viewing, I found a TV Launcher app for it. It aggregates UK channel streaming apps on a TV guide which allows you to do exactly what you suggest. Plenty of flexibility too. As long as you have the specific app on the Apple TV ie BBC iPlayer, ITVX, C4 etc (also NowTV if you subscribe to it) then you can see what’s on on the TV Launcher TV guide and click directly on the guide to go to the live broadcast. It effectively opens up the relevant app and plays the channel. It’s really good.

Can you fast forward and rewind with the same level of control on Apple TV that Sky Q offers?

I use the What’s On app too and really like it. But it can be a bit clunky (caused by the broadcaster apps rather than the dev) and I don't think anyone else in my family has given it a go though.

I'm on EE and did think the TV thing might be of interest but with the pricing I'm much happier to just continue with my current setup and look forward to the upcoming freeview app when that launches.

There is- it’s called TV launcher which is designed by a chap here in the UK, and it costs about a fiver as a one off payment. Works really well and is a genuine alternative to paying for a live tv subscription. There’s even a mobile version included.

I mean….you still need a subscription since it’s live tv, hence tv license

Yes, but I suppose that’s true for any watching of live tv in the UK. In that respect, freeview itself is not actually free. It is much cheaper than the big names though and if any of you are looking to save money it works well.

No ( I have Sky Q) but you can use all the functions that are available in whatever app you’re using to control playback etc. Q will take a lot of replacing in my house, but with some compromises it’s doable.

I don't know why no other company or online service has been capable of smooth rewinding and fast forwarding that Sky have been able to offer for 15 years or so. How hard can it be?
