Hi, I am about to buy the 11,6" i7. My main concern is the fan noise. I am a student so I'll be using it in the library and lectures. I do not want to have a noisy fan and get the professors/other classmates' attention. I'd like to know if the i7 gets hot while performing simple tasks (running mail, chrome, word, excel...) and thus the fan starts spinning?

When home, I occasionally would like to watch movies on the 11". I believe it supports 1080p which is great, but once again, will it get that hot so that the fan kicks up and then I won't be able to hear the movie?

Thank you.

Mail, Chrome, Word, and Excel should be OK and keep the fan around 2000rpm, which is quiet. Running a 1080p movie will get the fan running pretty fast. You won't have a problem hearing, though. If heat is your ultimate concern, go for the i5, but the i7 should be fine.

Thank your for your reply. I think I'd go for the i7. It will replace a macbook c2d which has served very well these 5 years, but starts struggling anytime I open more than 5 apps, especially since I upgraded it to SL... Don't get me wrong when I mention I am a student, I do also work in IT and sometimes I use more demanding software than just word processor and spreadsheets. But those times I won't mind heat&noise as much as I'd do in a library. I guess I am missing more performance compared to my c2d so i7 will do. I'll find out the hard way if this 11" air is what I am looking for.

Thanks!

AppleInsider just gave their review on the MBA. They are saying the i7 is almost as fast as the quad core i5 in the 2011 mbp. Pretty impressive if it is. :)

@ 2k-3.5k RPM the fan is not really noticeable on the 2010 MBA, however when it kicks into 4k+ RPM, I find it noticeable. However when comparing to most PC laptops, the MBA fan is pretty quiet compared to them.

If the 2011 MBA is running @ 2k-3.5k RPM while playing games like SCII and watching 1080p videos, I would be interested in upgrading. =]

As others mention, I am pretty curious as what your temps and fan speeds are during these tasks.

Yes, but they were comparing it to the 2.3GHz dual-core Core i5 used in the 13" MacBook Pro.
You're right, didn't actually look at the graph. Maybe the descriptions right before the graph messed up with the mind.:D

my 2010 mba's fans dont make that much noise even at 6k rpm. Youre fine.
