Just got my Ultra 2. Yay! Unpaired my old Ultra and started pairing the new one. It requires updating to OS 10.0.1 first. It's been at the "prepairing..." stage for 90 minutes now. Is this due to so many folks doing the update? Or am I having a problem? Also, the watch didn't turn on right away by hitting the digital crown. It took putting it on the charger. I know an update takes 50% battery life, but after an hour and a half it sure seems like the battery should be there by now. Can't check it, as it has the pairing screen displayed. I'm a bit afraid to pull it off the charge and start over, as I'm going to be restoring the old Ultra's info and don't want to lose it. Any ideas? Or am I just not being patient enough?

I'm having the same issue moving from a Series 4 to a Series 9. It needs to update to do the restore from backup.

I tried doing it a second time and it's still stuck on preparing. Feel that whatever Apple has setup for this is broken if you restore from backup from 10.0.1

EDIT: I ended up setting up the watch as new instead of restore from backup. Then after all set the watch app on the phone was stuck still in preparing. I turned both the watch and the phone off then turn on the phone and then the watch and now I am attempting to update the Watch

The “preparing” stage is done locally after the download is complete (i.e. unpackaging the download and getting things ready)…so seems unlikely it would have anything to do with others doing the update. 90 minutes does seem excessive though.

Did you try the side button? The side button (or the charger) is what turns the Apple Watch on. The Digital Crown does not turn the watch on.

I've heard of this happening before. For clarification, was your backup on 10.0.1? If so, since the Ultra 2 came with 10.0.0 you have to set it up first as a new Watch, then update it to 10.0.1 and then you can restore from your other backup.

It's a real pain and I would have thought Apple would have addressed this by now, but I guess not.

Thanks. I didn't hit the side button or the action button, as I was following a Youtube video to make sure I did it right. My mistake. :) It did start when I put in on the charger. I ended up starting over and doing a factory reset on the watch. It did the update quickly this time. Will see how the backup restore works. It's currently "connecting your Apple Watch. This may take a moment." It sure is, but am not sure if this is the stage where it restores the backup.

My backup was 10.0.1, but the Ultra wasn't. I couldn't do anything until the new Ultra 2 was updated. Agree that it's a pain!

Thanks for the feedback -- that confirms the suspicion. More importantly though, sorry you're going through this! Ugh! Hopefully you'll be up and running soon.

Working now!! Once I got past the update problem, all was fine. I did have to cancel the first process, do a factory reset, and start over to get the update working. Ironically I had updated the old Ultra yesterday in preparation for the new one. Should have realized that the update probably was after the Watches had shipped from the factory. Thanks all for your suggestions! Now I can go play with my antsy puppy.

I experienced the same issue today with the current 10.3. I performed a forced restart, shut down my phone, restarted it, and then did a forced restart on the AWU 2, and that resolved the problem for me. It’s also the first time I’ve experienced problems with updating my AWU 2.

Mine got stuck preparing 10.3 also. I deleted the software update file from the Watch app > Storage, rebooted the Watch and phone, and then the upgrade went well.
