Is there a way to keep the brightness up as far as it will go in the dark without the watch auto dimming?

Good question...mine is dimming at night time so much I can barely read it. I have the brightness turned all the way up, but it dims way too much!

You can switch night mode off in the Watch app on your phone, if that’s what you mean?

I am so glad you posted this. I thought I was the only one with this issue. It is noticeably less bright than the prior model and I hate it.

I think you’re conflating two different things here. OP is talking about auto dimming. AlFR is talking about night mode on the Modular watch face. Very, very different things. Night mode on that watch face (and the Wayfinder watch face) can be shut off, but the ambient light features across the watch that cause auto dimming (whether if the wrist is pointed away from the face, or just in dark environments) is not a setting - it is always on and cannot be shut off.

I have noticed the same issue. I have read, both here on macrumors and on reddit, other complaints about this.

I have requested, via the Apple feedback site, that they add a slider to set a floor for dimming in Auto-Brightness mode. Both the iPhone and iPad have this.

Please let Apple know how you feel - I have.

It's not just an Ultra issue; I noticed the same thing on my series 9. Apple is promoting as a new feature on this years watches the ability to dim the display to as low as one nit so as to not disturb the people around you. I'm sure that all of the owls that purchase new watches will be delighted, but for us humans, they clearly went overboard.

‘So as to not disturb the people around you, but we cannot guarantee you won’t be disturbed!’ :)

The series 9 is definitely brighter than the Ultra 2 AOD. My partner got a Series 9 and we compared them last night. I'm so disappointed by this Ultra 2.

just got the S10. Our living room is darkish, subtle lighting, and so my watch is too dark when I look at it at night in this room!

Is this an issue other people have?

EDIT, I don’t have the Ultra, my bad. I have jet black S10.
