are we talking about a mb or more a mbp??? Cause what would be plosible is the "ultra" portable mb to be the macbook update....
With just the dvd burner off and...Some new normal specs: memory, speed etc...
That way the macbook could be more affordable for students, like me, and lighter(smaller) cause WE take it everywhere :p
It's been a while since the iBook

My bet is that it will be added to the pro lineup. No way Apple will put all this R&D to make a tiny laptop and then put it at the low end of their product line.

eTextbooks are already available.

Hey Steve, iText is your next Killer App!

While patiently awaiting a replacement for my 12" PB G4, I keep running across rumors of a Mac Tablet. Why would anyone want a tablet, unless they were a UPS delivery guy or some sales representative who had to gather signatures? Then when hefting my son's textbook laden 30 pound backpack out of the back of my car, it dawned on me. Apple needs to create the iText.

Imagine using Apple's content negotiating savvy with text book publishers like they currently work with the music and video content industries.

This is already available. I am a university student, and I already have my health class book in electronic form. I would provide a link to where I got it, but I forgot! In my school bookstore, there were papers next to the books available in electronic form telling me where to get it. Mine was $40 rather than the $100 it would have been.

You can zoom in on the text column you want etc.

The downside is, that I won't be able to re-sell this when the semester is done.

25years, i thought the company was 30+ years.
All that time has been spent trying to find innovative ways to bring cool but geeky ideas to the biggest market possible.

Still an impressive feat.

I would hate there to be a mac tablet, they are useless and pointless

useless and pointless... to you
some people like having touch-screen capabilities, who cares if :apple: decides to make something that fits to someone else's needs.

 OMG i only have one mac, and i only need one mac, ahh what will i do if the perfect ultra-portable is not made specifically for me!?!

This news doesn't excite me in the least. We don't need another laptop; we've got laptops. What we really need is a Mac tablet!!! I want a tablet, 8.5" x 11" or smaller that I can carry around with me. Here's what it would have:

Wi-Fi
EVDO support
Built in webcam and microphone
USB ports
Web browsing
iTunes
View TV shows and movies
Download and read books and magazine articles (think Kindle)Piece of S***
Touch keypad like iPhone (optional handwriting recognition)

This would be the ultimate light-weight, portable media device. With it I could surf the web, send emails, webcam, listen to music, watch movies or TV shows, or even read books and magazines... all with a slender tablet that I could hold like a magazine. I could use it literally anywhere and have Internet access where ever I go. The iPhone screen just isn't large enough for all of these uses.

IMHO Apple is really missing the boat here. This would be a "killer app" type of product not only for the home but I could see everyone at work carrying them around. And if there was built in Exchange access and an open API so that developers could create applications for it, forget about it! Game over, Redmond.

C'mon Steve, make this happen!

You can do that with a convertible laptop as well, and it can still be just as small and offer you the option of having a real keyboard, instead of one that lacks tactile feedback. I am sure that you might want to type a long letter or email or paper, and would love to convert your tablet to a laptop for easier use.

This is very interesting. Are these books copy-protected? Do you have to login with a university ID? Are they DRM-ed? Do they come as pdf files? I'm very curious!

iTouchPanel

I would love to have an iPod touch, just three times larger running an open version of leopard. That would be ideal...

When to buy?

all right guys... im in the market for a macbook (not MBP). but as we all know, the MWSF is coming up. im only interested in spending the same amount the macbooks currently cost. so if the slimmer macbooks are more, im gonna stick with the current ones. should i buy now? will i be disappointed after MWSF?

Why do we get these questions every time?

Seriously, nobody can answer this one right now with any certainty, and only YOU know how you will "feel" about your purchasing decision.

Obviously, some people have this mentality that they want what is offered today, at today's asking price - and would be perfectly happy with it ONLY if something newer doesn't get created afterwards. Then, their product magically becomes useless/worthless/a "bad" buy.

If you're that type, then your only sensible course of action is to wait a little while and see what Apple announces at Macworld. Then you can buy whatever Macbook you like, with high confidence that it won't get updated again in a major way for another 6 months to 1 year.

Otherwise, you should probably buy the product that meets your needs, so you can begin USING it and reaping the benefits of it. I've *never* seen a computer that was a "good investment" for ANY reason other than someone getting enough work/usefulness/entertainment value out of it over its usable lifespan to justify its cost. They ALL depreciate in "resale value" VERY rapidly.

Hi! The answer depends on your immediate needs: how soon do you need your new computer? If you don't mind the wait, then all indications point to Apple announcing "something" next month, with the possibility of a premium price tag. Please note the difference between "announcing" and "releasing" a product; a product would be announced in January, but meaningful shipments wouldn't commence until February - if not later.

why is everyone always thalking about a mac tablet. havnt we already heard that there was something strange about the mousepad??? so if there is a mousepad then there is pretty much no way that it could be a tablet... right.

and i totally agree with this comment: by: phoxrenvatio-- useless and pointless... to you

Some windows convertible laptops (ie with twisty touchscreen displays) have a touchpad as well.

As to the tablet features, as long as it has similar features to the latest dell screen (ie capacitive and works with fingers or with pressure when used with the pen) I can see a very good use for the graphic designer if the price isn't extortionately high - no need for a portable wacom etc.

This is what I'd like. I don't care if its aluminum or plastic.. I'd prolly prefer aluminum though.

Wouldn't this be nice?

I also want this! To all you mactouch haters I hope you get your "ultra-portable". But don't try to pretend there isn't a market for the mactouch!

one last time... sorry guys

ok. if they come out with anything new, will the macbook still be the cheapest? do i really have to worry about it serious update for it? if so, what could be possible?

I really want to have it for christmas and don't want to wait almost another month for nothing.

How about this:
macbooktouch.jpg

Only a Multi-Touch input device. No touchscreen, just the input has Multi-Touch.
Imagine what you can do with it....

i think that's stupid.. when people type, the constantly keep their fingers in touch with multiple keys. even keys they aren't using. when i type i always start with my fingers in these positions: ASDF JKL; ... that's why it isn't such a good idea. if you give the slightest touch to any key, it's going to type it when you didn't mean to.

How about this....

Make the keyboard a real keyboard, and make the trackpad multi-touch. Lose the big button and make it one really big MT surface. You can even keep the weird black case with silver lining. Give me a real keyboard though.

I don't think the keyboard will go anywhere until something better than it comes along and replaces it.

Hmmm something inside of me tells me now that Apple might come really with something innovative on Macworld 2008. Something the media and news papers will write about and something that will blow our socks off.... :D

I'm all in for an Macbook (pro) with an sub touch-screen that replace the trackpad. I like the black mockup!

With kind regards,
Bas

The trackpad can already sense two fingers, what more do you want?
