As we await possible news of Apple Watch updates I thought I’d share my thoughts on almost a year with my Ultra.

Firstly I’m going to cut to the chase and say I really like my Ultra and have been very pleased with my purchase.
Is it perfect? Probably not, but I am happy with it.

So firstly what about design and material.
Size wise it’s great, my AW6 was good but airways felt a little small, so the Ultra was a much appreciated step up in size.
Then onto the materials. Maybe I’ve been lucky but after wearing pretty much all day every day the case is still looking pretty new and doesn’t have any noticeable blemishes. I was a little anxious about how it would stand up, but those fears have proved groundless.
And I would highlight I wear it when exercising, doing DIY and at work which can include construction sites, I’ve also worn it exploring abandoned tunnels and bunkers. So it gets a lot of use and has taken a few knocks.
I use a variety of straps but my favourite is still the orange Alpine band, I even altered the Wayfinder Watch face to have orange elements. (Picture didn’t show colours as well as hoped.)

Then there is the screen.
It may not be massively bigger, but I’ve found the extra size useful.
And the flat screen has been much easier to read for me.
Clarity in all lighting conditions is great and I’ve been pleased with how it’s worked.
I like the option to switch to the night colour mode, makes it subtler in low light conditions and easy to read.

My biggest complaint with the Ultra when I got it was the Wayfinder watch face.
On launch each 5 minute segment was erroneously divided into 6 rather 5 making it not as easy to be accurate.
Fortunately this was resolved reasonably quickly.

I guess I’ve if the biggest criticisms of AW in general is battery life. But for me it has not been an issue.
The extra battery life meant I started using sleep monitoring and have continued with this.
I also run, do Apple Fitness+ workouts and walk the dog, so it’s getting a good set of usage.
Generally I am getting 36 hour’s use and find myself either charging after my morning workout whilst getting ready for work, or in the evening whilst relaxing. An hour or so charge and I’m up and running again, maybe hour and half on a bad day.

I had not used sleep tracking before, and have found this a really good addition to my health monitoring.
It seems a fairly good approximation of my sleep, and the wrist temperature has done a good job of highlighting when I’ve been ill.

Workout tracking on this has been better than my AW6.
The GPS has been much better and I’ve had less dropouts, if any.
And now I use a sport loop rather than band I don’t get any heart rate dropouts. Yes, I know this would have most likely fixed issues on my AW6, but it was only moving to this and finding my sport band couldn’t be adjusted to a good fit that made me realise the issue and solutions.
And I’ve find the extra button ideal for starting workouts, much simpler.

All of the above combined mean I’m pretty happy with my Ultra.

Yes the Alpine and Trail bands as well Sport Loops get dirty, but I’ve found using a hand soap under warm tap water cleans them up well.

Yes they are a few areas for improvement.
Of course it would be great if the battery was bigger.
More on board memory or more flexibility to use memory. I found I could not fit many audio books, and speed of loading mean I simply use my iPhone for audio books.
Some settings seem to randomly changed, I have a running playlist set to shuffle. This will regularly default back to start from beginning, and if I’m not careful it’s too late by the time I’m out as I don’t take my iPhone anymore.

But the niggles are minor for me.
I’ll be interested to see what the next generation Ultra is like, but am unlikely to upgrade unless it has some compelling new feature.

Now I know some people will have totally different views, but that’s ok.
Hope you don’t mind me sharing, have a great day.👍

I’d upgrade to a new Ultra in a heartbeat if they came out with a new model that removes the crown guard. I hate that thing. It makes the crown much harder to use than the Series 8. If it wasn’t for the battery life I’d be wearing an Hermes Apple Watch. They still have the best watch faces.

I absolutely love my ultra and couldn’t go back to the other versions.

I have the same view as you - mine is excellent. I took it with me in France and I wore it while riding every day in 40ºC heat, it didn't miss a beat. I've got a Amazon titanium bracelet for it - not expensive but good.

In Alpe D'Huez one of the hotel staff noticed it was the Ultra and was asking about it, what's it's like. This is my first smart watch ever, and very pleased with it. Previously I was rather doubtful at these gadgets but this one with close integration with my other Apple devices is useful, plus I use the Strava app on the watch when I'm walking.

I understand completely why some people like it. It’s not for me as I prefer the slimline series, the ultra is just a chunk for me. The only thing I found I liked was the flat screen so I hope they bring that in with the S10 redesign. The battery is helpful but not worth the added bulk imho.

I’ve never really noticed the crown guard as an issue, but can see why it may be an issue for some.
Stylistically I like what it adds to the overall look and differentiates the Ultra from other models.
Fair comment though.👍

I found the flat screen much better both in terms of ease of view and styling.
Be interested to see what any watches look like and which style elements carry through.👍

Thanks for sharing your experiences, @CyberDavis. I’d say they largely mirror my own.

Thanks to the Apple marketing machine selling these to those who climb mountains, run marathons, and deep sea dive, I didn’t originally see myself as an Ultra customer. However, after a week or so I realized it had all the features I was looking for to upgrade from my Series 4, I liked the rugged reimagining of the form factor, and I don’t have to do all those extreme outdoor activities to enjoy the watch as is.

Honestly, the Ultra has made me fall in love with the Apple Watch all over again which has inspired me to be a little more outdoorsy and fitness-minded than ever before. I get it’s not for everyone, but it’s been awesome for me.

P.S. As for the crown guard, I get why some people wouldn’t like it, but it’s actually been great for me – as advertised, it has helped eliminate rogue button presses with gloves on when doing yard work in the summer and walks in the winter. That’s been another small, but nice quality of life improvement for me, though I totally get everyone’s experience and preferences could be very different here.

I love everything about the Ultra … except for the size. And by size I mean (mostly) the thickness. If it was flatter and maybe shrink to 47 when the bezels get smaller, it would be ideal (for me).

I bought mine at launch, wasn’t sure if I would like it and might return, but, turns out best AW ever, til today.
Don’t know what will be announced today, I put my reasons to upgrade in the other thread

I love my ultra too and really, the two features that matter most to me are; the Action button, and the much longer battery life. That's really it! If they can have those features for the regular Series, that would be great.

I bought mine looking at a potential replacement for my Garmin Fenix.
Sadly that was not the case. It lacks in a few key (for me) areas.

However, for daily use and hikes/climbs that are only a few hours in length it has done well.
I won't go back to a standard AW.

btw - the newly announced Nike bands look sweet.

My only request is to optimize the screen more. In areas where data is displayed, it is tiny in a space where it could be twice the size for people without perfect vision. They are putting tiny little digits in an area that they could be much larger.
