So, I took my two month old Ultra out for a swim— for the first and only time— and it bricked it. It’s never been dropped, knocked or even scratched. Hell, I’ve never even worn it in the shower.

We went to a small community water park and I’d been floating on a tube in the lazy river for about 40 minutes. For most of that time, the watch was out of the water. And the few times it was, it was only submerged about a foot.

At about the 40 minute mark, I looked down at it and noticed the screen was blacked out. I wasn’t too concerned at the time, thinking maybe it hadn’t been fully charged.

However, once I got home and put it on the charger—nothing, just a black screen. I left it in a couple hours but with no change. Same for overnight.

I also tried to restart it, with both a single and two-button “hard” restart. Still nothing.

I realize that Apple doesn’t claim the watch is waterproof, but they do state that it is capable of being used for swimming and even diving down to 40 meters. Given that, I should think a single trip to a lazy river (on its FIRST swim outing) shouldn’t have been beyond its capabilities or use beyond what it was intended for.

Has anyone else here experienced something like this or heard similar stories? I have an appt with a Genius Bar today to evaluate it but I’m pretty disappointed to say the least.

Considering it is supposed to be ok for varied watersports it might just be a dud. My S7 has been swimming with me in sea/lake/pool countless times (and all my previous AWs also), I have never had an issue.

That’s kinda what I’m thinking as well. My concern is that I didn’t get AppleCare+ (an oversight) and that they’ll refuse any warranty repair because it’s water related.

That would be really unfortunate. I was using as it was intended and designed (their own specifications state it can be used for diving). If they don’t make this right, I doubt I’ll ever trust owning an Apple wearable again. (Especially an $800 sport watch that can’t handle even a few minutes in the water.)
 
It's also possible that it's not related to the water.

Products fail unfortunately, but at least it's still under warranty (2 months old).
 
Sure, I understand where you are coming from, but I'm sure they will be ok with sorting it with the standard warranty.

Garmin and other health watches are all rated for this and for a supposed 'extreme sports model' you can really kick up a fuss these days online if they don't help in this case.

Let us know how things pan out.

well, sometimes sh%$# happens, could be bad seals from the start or could be something else. Lots of threads here where people take it for diving with no issues so not a systemic issue ...
keep us posted how Apple is handling it

That's a bummer. I'll echo most everyone else... my watch (Ultra since launch day) has been swimming multiple times with no issue. The kids love to go to the deep end and see me flatten myself against the floor, just to see what the dive depth is and how long we can stay there :)

Hope Apple is kind to you today!
 
One interesting thing I forgot to mention. When I told the Genius Bar tech that it happened while swimming, he asked if I’d turned on Water Lock “to keep water from entering the watch” before I got in the water.

I was like, uh… I don’t believe that’s how that works. He then tried to say, no, I think it is and pulled up the Apple page on his iPad. After taking a minute to read it, he said, “Oh, yeah, it looks like you’re right.” 🤨 (I have the Depth app set to start automatically when the watch is submerged, which also automatically activates Water Lock. But still…)

sounds like the "Genius" needed some basic education on an AW ... I'm sure you'll get a survey about your visit ...
