Other Ultrawide angle camera, on next iPhone?

What do you want the additional camera to be?

  1. Keep the telephoto lens

    So LG was right afterall.

Apple started the dual camera craze by pairing a telephoto lens with the main camera. Of course, the Android OEMs copied the look, but they all have varied solutions for the second lens. Huawei put a monochrome camera. The rest either copied the telephoto way, or put in a low res camera for depth sensor. But apparently those aren't what customers are looking for as things are changing. Huawei, Xiaomi, and Samsung finally opted for the ultrawide angle lens as their second (or third) camera.

Of course the funny thing was, LG did it first way back as their second camera. (poor LG)

Will Apple follow suit? After using the XR a few times, I think the bokeh thing does not need the telephoto lens per se. Meanwhile, ultrawide angle lens can be useful in many situations like landscapes or group shots.

It's all speculation at this point. I personally believe that since Samsung has put one on the new S10, Apple will keep pace with a wide angle version.

Apple probably decided on a triple lens solution 6 months ago when Huawei came out with triple lens and earned the highest DxOMark. Apple will copy the optical zoom increase from 2X to 3X as well (Bloomberg already reported this). This is because software can already sharpen photos to simulate 2X with the main lens. The third lens will be ultrawide (Bloomberg) because everybody is doing this. Apple already increased the FOV on the 2018 iPhone and the next step is ultrawide.

    Forget the ultrawide!
If all the muscle and innovating-power means anything, it is the 'night mode' solution Apple need to deliver on!

You mean ‘Night Sight’. But I agree, this is a crucial experience that Apple needs to improve upon, and it’s something that since the iPhone 7, that they were allegedly discussing how ‘night photos’ had been much improved, which in terms of what Google is doing with ‘Night Sight’, Apple is actually falling behind in this area. I’m not one that’s really compelled to necessarily want to upgrade to the latest hardware every year, but if Apple could seriously improve that specific camera functionality for low light photos, _that_ would put me in a situation where I would consider it.

I'd love to see Apple come out with some version of Night Sight. But I suspect they won't until it's point-and-click, not point-wait-and-click. I've not used Night Sight, but from what I've heard (anyone know for sure?), there's a period where the camera has to be held steady. That's a very un-Apple approach. But if they can make it "instant", we could see something like that.

I doubt Apple would be able to make NightSight an it instant thing. They might rather goes with improved sensor like Huawei though. That RYYB sensor is no joke.

Agreed. I think they’re now able to stimulate 2x optical zoom with AI and algorithm so it’s time to move to 3x optical. 5x is overkill IMO.

If they add ToF camera to 2019 iPhone it’d be instant buy for me. That depth of field videos is very interesting feature from Huawei P30 Pro.
