I've been noticing a long boot time recently (2008 MacPro 3,1 OS 10.6.8) as the machine will stall after the desktop is displayed. At that time the machine will not take any input except mouse movement. I tracked it down to a Jan 2014 Macally USB3/eSATA enclosure housing a 4TB HGST drive (used as USB2). When I turn that enclosure off, the stall is released, bootups are now as prompts as ever. I use that drive to backup a video library (CCC).

Any simple fix short of throwing the enclosure or drive or both away, or just don't turn the enclosure on till after the machine boots?

If the drive and enclosure work without trouble once booted, then there is your answer. I would probably find myself another enclosure (that you can return if it doesn't work out) to eleminate the issue, but I'd say it's not pressing since you are able to use it as long as you wait until booted.
