Just tried to restore my iPhone 3g and it was getting stuck on the restore bar for ages. Eventually unplugged it restarted my MBP but still got stuck on the restore bar when restoring. Then iTunes told me it couldn't restore it and gave me this:

I am having the same problem, but I can't seem to find wifi sync on my Mac to delete it. It's not in the applications folder.

very old post but VERY valuable to know for anyone with wifiSync installed.

you cannot restore or upgrade phone if you have wifiSync installed.
details: iphone 4, running 4.1, upgrading to 4.2. would always stop about 60% of the way through upgrade. the log would end here
    iTunes[2933:15547]: ASR progress: Sending payload
    iTunes[2933:15547]: <Restore Device 0x1a4d6be0>: operation 13 progress 86

i downloaded the uninstaller from wifiSyncs site, uninstalled it and tried restoring the phone and it worked. just an fyi. i did not find this information anywhere, regarding wifiSync being the problem behind this. this community is crucial to understanding anything mac.
