un-checked songs still sync, how to stop?

This seems odd, but even the items I have deselected (unchecked) in iTunes continue to sync with my iPhone. I never had this problem with an iPod, but can't figure out how to resolve it. Thoughts?

are you sure you have the checkbox for "only sync checked items?" set? Ioverlooked this at first.

It should be on the "summary" page of the iPhone when you plug it in to iTunes.
