Unable set sound to HomePod permanently

I have an Apple TV (MGY52B/A) and a HomePod mini in the same Apple Home room but it only lets me set the HomePod as a temporary output. Have I missed something? It’s the Apple TV 4 (the one before the 4k) but it says it supports it.

Unfortunately, the 4K models are are the only ones that support permanently setting HomePods as external audio out. The HD model, which preceded the 4K models can only use HomePods temporarily.
