What model Mac do you have and version of OSX?

Did you try booting into the recovery mode by way of Cmd-R?

I have a 2011 macbook pro. thats all i can tell you at the moment as I cant get to but 2 screens. command + R only brings me to a screen with a picture and name of my hard drive. all i can do from there is click on it to go back to the messed up login screen or connect to the wifi. btw im running Mavericks. thanks so much for the reply!
