Unable to change Apple ID email

I'm trying to change my Apple ID from my work email address to my personal email address (Gmail). I used to have my Gmail address listed as a "CONTACTABLE AT:" address in my Apple ID profile, but that is no longer the case. Now, when I try to switch my Apple ID to my Gmail address, I get an error message saying "Your new Apple ID cannot be the same as your notification email address. Choose a different email address." I've found some people have ended up creating a new email account only to use it as their new Apple ID, to work around this bug... but I really don't need another email account! Help, please...
 
i found this in another forum. i think they delete that email than changed it

"What I hadn't realised is that I have to click "Edit", in the Security section, in order to see the "Notification Email". With your prompting I eventually found it and all is now well"
