Hi y'all, I've been having this really frustrating issue with both of my macs (2020 m1 mac mini and 2018 macbook pro) for a few months now. I like to organize my files in icon view, using group by > tags and sort by > tags to create a hierarchical color system that works for me really well. I had this system set as my default in "view options", so when I created a new folder it always already had the color system set up and ready to go. A few months ago this abruptly stopped working, as the default view option had changed and can't seem to be reverted, so now every time I create a folder I have to manually change the options to group and sort by tag, which is cumbersome as I have hundreds upon hundreds of folders.

Now, when I go into "view options" it automatically has "sort by; tags" but I have to still manually hit "use groups" and then "group by > tags". No amount of attempts at changing the default will fix this, no matter which folder I try (including parent folders like my user folder or Macintosh HD folder). It automatically reverts back to "group by; none" and it's a pain in the ass to change, especially since I ran a dot_clean terminal command for another issue I've been having with my mac and so almost all of my folders have lost their manually set view options.

I think that it may have something to do with upgrading both computers to Monterey, as I remember my default tagging system was operating seamlessly one day, and then totally bunk the next. Is there a solution for this? I briefly upgraded to Ventura but I don't think it fixed the issue, IIRC. I'm running Monterey 12.6.2 on both computers.

I think I gave up on this aspect of Finder many years ago and it was probably because a macOS upgrade changed something then.

If you look at the following Apple Support page, you'll see differences in the description depending on the version of macOS:

This organization seems important to you and I'd suggest looking into third-party Finder-alternative applications.
