    heya!

i've just bought a portable 1TB WD Elements SE for my mbp but i am unable to format it using disk utility :(

these are the settings i've used:
    volume scheme: 1 partition
    options: GUID partition table
    format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

when "apply" the settings and "partition", i get the following error:

    Partition failed with the error:
    Operation timed out

    please help! thanks!

Is the disc actually "on", i mean spinning? Might be broken.

yes, the hdd was brand new, out of the box and working fine, mounted onto finder, spinning and all. just refused to let itself be formatted ;)

but an update anyways in case anyone might have the same problem in the future.
i managed to solve the issue by updating the NTFS-3G i had to the latest one offered on the apple site. (from 2009.2.1 to 2010.10.2 - though i know that this not the latest version offered by tuxera)
so its working all fine and dandy now :)
