I already have over 3GB of email in MobileMe. Don't know what that means for the 5GB free storage...

Same problem here. Existing MobileMe users are being shafted at the expense of newcomers. Naturally, as long as MobileMe users are not allowed to transition, they do not get any of the benefits of iCloud. Not exactly fair how they treat long-time users who have been paying for MobileMe...
Patience is valuable at this point. It's bound to be terribly busy until all the early adopters are up and running.
