Unable to play .avi files

I have been storing /"exporting" photos/videos from Iphoto to an external HD. When I tried to play the video clips, they do not play. The image is showing (Quicktime)but the play button does not stay but goes off. I have downloaded Perian & VLC but they don't work either. Should I have converted the files to another format before exporting? The file sizes have not changed. Please help!

Before you upload a sample (Dropbox's Public folder can work too, and it is easier than MegaUpload and the like), analyse a sample .avi file via VideoSpec (I prefer that, though it hasn't been updated since 11/2009), MediaInfo Mac (10/2010) or MediaInfo (4/2011, there is a Mac OS X version to download, VideoSpec and MediaInfo Mac are using the same library as MediaInfo) and attach* the report here.
