I had Avast installed on my mac and today I removed it.

After removing I searched for any leftovers and found a directory named "Avast" in /Library/StagedExtensions/Library/Application Support.

I tried to remove it from the terminal but I got the following error:

I enabled root user and tried to remove the file from it but I still get the same set of errors in the terminal. Please help.

The StagedExtensions directory is protected by System Integrity Protection (SIP) from the operating system. You need to disable SIP through the recovery partition and then you'll be able to delete those files. There are directions to disable it here: https://www.imore.com/el-capitan-system-integrity-protection-helps-keep-malware-away
When you're done, you should re-enable it for security purposes.

Thanks! I will try this.

Edit: Tried this method and I was able to remove the directory afterward.

Here's how to remove it:

1. Boot from a different drive. A cloned backup will work well for this task.
2. Once booted, click the icon for your internal drive ONE time to select it.
3. Type command-i (eye) to bring up the get info box
4. At the bottom of get info click the lock and enter your password
5. In sharing and permissions, put a check into the box "ignore ownership on this volume".

Now you should be able to navigate to
/Library/StagedExtensions/Library/Application Support
... and simply delete the folder in the finder. Then empty the trash.

Reboot to your internal drive and check again.
It should be gone.
